It was rather impressive how quickly things were starting to seem normal. Things like robots, empty streets and flickering daylight (Although the days and nights were becoming less and less erratic.). Things like two moons and no stars at night, and things like having yet to meet what he'd consider a "normal" person. He was getting used to it. He was making himself get used to it.
Gus was certain it would happen eventually- after all, it seemed like he was going to be here for a very long time. A very, very, very long time. But he'd rather get used to it now, which apparently meant wandering aimlessly every so often and trying to memorize the gibberish street signs. He wondered if this would be any easier if he was still capable of flying (Though personally doubted it.).
With the heatwave of not too long ago, Gus had been finally forced to concede defeat in terms of clothing. He'd abandoned his sweater in favor of something with shorter sleeves, and had found some jeans to replace his pants. It was for the best, really. The clothes he'd died in were getting stiff and filthy, and currently lay in a small pile in the library where he was still squatting. Another thing he was getting used to, was stealing. Or, rather, just taking what he needed, since there wasn't exactly anyone to steal from, as far as he could tell. It was nice, after a while, and it was a relief to not have to worry about money and ways to procure it. But still, after a lifetime of having it drilled into his head that simply taking something was wrong, the whole concept felt just a little uncomfortable.
But again, he was getting used to it.
He'd stumbled across the river first a few days ago, and for today, at least, he'd decided he was going to follow it. Partly for something to do, partly because he wondered if it was the same river he'd followed before. The street itself was lined with little shops and cafes, and Gus had the impression that if this were a city with any discernible population, it would have been a rather busy area.

Maxwell had decided that afternoon to take to the skies, mostly just to exercise his wings. He didn't transform often due to his, er, condition, but he didn't want to lose the ability to fly or transform quickly in case of an emergency. Normally, he'd fly once a week for a good hour to stretch out those muscles, but the day/night cycle didn't work properly here. At least, it didn't feel like it. Max had been in the city for a while now and though he'd found a store more than once that sold watches, none of them worked right. Even the analogue clocks had this weird habit of slowing down and then speeding up again.
Whatever, it made as much sense as anything else here.
Flying through the streets, Max sometimes saw people. He did see a few trying to go from one end to the other with his small bag clutched in both feet. A man in a suit, a short angry man, a monkey girl, a piebald woman, a fox, a nervous man in a tin hat, and now he was flying past someone else in the street. It took him a moment to realize it was his Dad, sweaterless and without the signs of aging Max knew, and he lost his balance. He fell a few feet and regained balance, coming back around to double check. That... was his Dad. No doubt about it. Without grey hair or smile lines, mind you, but that cheery demeanor, ponytail, and oddly shaped nose was undeniable.
Just when Max thought things would be different here, things started lining back up to be normal. Just 'yesterday', he had met someone less than friendly, again, but this time they had decided to take out their frustrations on him. It was something he was used to back home, but he had hoped to escape it here. But suddenly his Dad showed up as well and he briefly wondered if this was supposed to be some sort of punishment after life or something. He made his way into a nearby storefront and changed back. His Dad couldn't see the weird black goop that accompanied the transformation, he just couldn't.
As he pulled the compact from the sack, he grabbed a long sleeve shirt from the rack and pulled it over his head to cover his chest and arms first before worrying about modesty, though it was soon to follow with a simple pair of jeans in the smallest size. It... wasn't his style, but it would do. He checked his makeup in the handheld mirror (transformation always did weird things to it) and with the other supplies in his bag, he fixed up the worn areas, sealed it, and stood up straight. He took a deep breath before exiting the store as Gus' son.

Gus, being the paragon of observation that he was, hadn't noticed a bird flying nearby. Maybe he was just looking the wrong way. Maybe Max's attempts to go briefly unnoticed simply went according to plan. Maybe it was such an ingrained bit of normalcy that even in this empty city he couldn't bring himself to register it. Maybe the river was making pretty reflections on the bridge and he'd decided it was worth watching for a while (His mother had always had a peculiar little bit of feathering on her wings that suggested she might have some magpie in her somewhere, but she never spoke of it.). Either way, he didn't notice Max, and it didn't occur to him to follow or seek him out.
He did, however, notice a small cafe, and ducked in briefly. As per usual, there was no barista, no patrons, just one form-locked crow-man poking around behind the counter, debating which pastries were worth swiping, and wondering just how long they'd been sitting there. And who made them. And whether or not they might contain anything that would disagree with his digestive system.
Sometimes it just didn't pay to experiment. Three croissants in a baggy and a cup of what he assumed was tea (He found himself purposely avoiding looking at the coffeepot.), and he was back out on the street, ready to continue his stroll.
Out of habit, he glanced both ways down the street, and it was this and this reason alone that he noticed the figure further down the street. Shoving the one pastry he was holding in his mouth and passing the paper bag to the hand with the cup, he started waving at them- whole arm swinging in full "Hey look over here I'm trying to get your attention" style. Not because he recognized them in the slightest, of course, but because it was nice to actually see someone.

No one else was with Dad, and that was odd. Not his Mom, not any of his four siblings, not even his uncle and Gus' brother were with him, and while that was certainly something he should've noticed before, he had only thought about it now when he saw Gus waving dramatically at him. It wasn't really like his Dad to be alone very often. He was a social bird. Well, social with birds who weren't Max, at least. Without much of a response, Max walked towards his father, and breathed deeply. Everything was weird. It was definitely real, all of it, but it didn't make any sense. Max didn't know what to expect out of this weird, younger looking, non-sweatered version of his Dad, but he didn't really expect it to turn out well. He looked like an idiot with a croissant just shoved in his mouth, though, so at least something was consistent. He briefly wondered if Dad had cooked, because he was quite hungry.
When he entered earshot, Max decided he wasn't going to wait to speak. He would, for once, take charge of the situation. "I wasn't expecting to see you here," was all he could think to say. He couldn't say he was happy to see Gus. He didn't know how he felt about it yet. As he got closer, it was more apparent that Gus was... different. Max didn't know what had happened to him, but he didn't know a lot about this, uh, place either. All he could do was stare.

Gus let his arm swing down once the figure started moving toward him. He resumed munching on the croissant, and waited patiently for them to get closer.
The makeup is odd. he thought. Some sort of mime?
His face didn't seem to go with the rest of their outfit. Mimes didn't usually wear jeans, or so Gus believed, and he rather doubted they wore their makeup off-duty. But he couldn't really think of any other good excuse, seeing as Goth wasn't yet a thing in the 1970's, and KISS was only just becoming popular (And besides that, wasn't his style of music.). The makeup made it a little hard to tell, but they didn't seem very old. Not out of teen years, at least.
Still, he probably shouldn't go about judging people for their fashion choices. He didn't really have a leg to stand on in those regards.
He opened his mouth to say "Oh I know you start to think you're the only one around." before what the kid said actually registered- not "I didn't expect to see anyone' but "I didn't expect to see you." Gus cocked his head and squinted a bit. "Do I... know you?"

Max knew quite a bit about his father. Or at least, he perceived a lot about his father. Max knew that he was the least favorite, to the point where he was often left behind. It didn't really bother him as much anymore, and he wasn't the type to want to go out where all the ignorant, noisy people were, anyway. Things went wrong a lot when it came to family outings when he was around. He'd given up trying to please his Dad a long time ago. But this? Do I know you? It was something Max didn't expect and while he could easily think of other reasons a weird looking version of his Dad wouldn't know who he was, logic seemed to vanish from him and left behind a lump in his throat.
Thankfully, Max was very practiced at shoving emotion to the side, and while he definitely looked disappointed, it only took a moment and an awkward cough to compose himself. He spoke before consciously deciding a conversation path, which was rare for him, but he was still fairly stressed at this point.
"Dad, Augustus," it was weird to call his dad by his name, but he had to make sure this was indeed his father, "I'm your son."

Gus felt a little ball of guilt settle into his stomach. He was usually very good with names and faces (complicated foreign names aside.), and was staring desperately at the boy's face, trying to remember where he might have seen him before. Some funeral, perhaps? Some of his friends had children, yes, but none very old. None old enough to remember him at this age, when he should have been dead for- eight, ten years maybe?
That thought itself disturbed him, and he quickly filed it away in the part of his mind marked 'Never think about this again.'
Still, he caught the disappointed look, if only because he was studying the kid's face so intently. He hated to disappoint people. Even if these people were virtual strangers.
But Dad, the kid called him, Augustus. He didn't know anyone (Besides his brother when he was particularly irritated.) who called him by his full name anymore, and he didn't know anyone period who called him "Dad". Gus could only squint in confusion. "I don't... I'm sorry, I think you're mistaken, I don't have any children. I don't think." Hell, he hadn't even had sex in years, and the only woman he'd ever been intimate with had never mentioned being pregnant. He was fairly certain she would have told him- he hoped she would have told him. "Who's your mother?"

There was too much emotion in this for Max to be comfortable, and he didn't know what to do with it all. Max would think he'd be more okay with Gus denying/not remembering everyone in their family, but it just made him feel worse. Conflicting emotions were filling his mind and smothered rational thought at this point and it was overwhelming for the fifteen-year-old. As the knot grew in his stomach, he stayed outwardly calm, only expressing general concern in the face.
A small part of him didn't want to be stranded all alone in this weird little place, no matter how much he enjoyed solitude. A small part of him that he tried his best to ignore missed his family, especially his brother and his Mom. To see Dad there wasn't his first choice, certainly, but it was something. But all of that was instantly taken away from him, and the wave of disappointment surprised Max before it angered him. Dad at least had a (poor) reason to ignore Max, but to forget everyone else? Wendy was a great Mom, and a supportive wife who had been through a lot in life. She doesn't deserve to just be forgotten. His siblings, even Candy, he had to admit, didn't deserve to just be forgotten. Max wouldn't wish the situation on anyone. It really was a terrible feeling, and he hadn't quite learned how to deal with it yet, much less move past it. This was obviously a different Gus, but it was hard for Max to take that into consideration feeling so much at once.
"... My Mom, your wife's name is Wendy Wayland. She had a husband before you, a police officer, who died in the line of duty, and you arranged the funeral. You two became friends after, and eventually you got her pregnant. Shortly after, you got married and after twenty-one years, you're still together and have five kids. I'm the youngest." It was awkward to say. It was probably awkward to listen to. He knew it wasn't something Gus ever liked bringing up or hearing about. He didn't care right now.

Meanwhile, all Gus felt was confused. People didn't just up and claim to be someone's son out of the blue- not without good reason (The reason usually being inheritance, in his experience.) And on top of that, he didn't know a Wendy Wayland. Yes, he'd arranged funerals for policemen before, but the name didn't even ring a bell. He was fairly certain he didn't know any Waylands, actually, Wendy or otherwise.
"Um, I don't..." He started to shift awkwardly. The story itself wasn't awkward to him, it was just... wrong. More than implausible, it was simply impossible- at least for him. Gus wasn't sure if this was some sort of joke, or if the child were delusional, or what, exactly, and he couldn't hope to fathom how they expected him to react to this. "I mean, I'm sorry, but I don't know what you're talking about. I don't know any Wendys." Certainly none he'd been in a twenty-year relationship with. However, the fact that the kid correctly guessed his profession unnerved him. "I mean, I do.. do that, I'm a funeral director, but um, none of that actually happened... not to me at least." It occurred to Gus that maybe the child was mistaking him for his brother. Although it was a bit of a stretch, it was possible that Bart had started going by Gus's name and possible that he'd met a nice widow and possible that he'd married and had five children and if the whole idea weren't so patently absurd and out of character for his brother then Gus might have pursued the line of thought entirely. "I, um, look, as nice as that all sounds," (And it did sound very nice.) "I don't really have a wife, or a family. Not like that at least. I'm sorry, you must be mistaken, I'm not your father. I couldn't be."

I'm not your father. I couldn't be.
The words echoed a bit through his head before settling in the back of his throat. The single withered thought in the drought in Max's mind quietly uttered that this wasn't really his Dad. He was younger and wasn't wearing a sweater and didn't even answer to the name Augustus, really. It was just another dark skinned mortician with a funny nose. Another thought rudely interrupted, pointing out that a nose that unique would be impossible to find on someone who just happened to be a dark skinned mortician with the mannerisms of an airhead. They quibbled in the back of Max's mind with polite quietness and in the end he found himself at a loss for words.
So tears came instead. He didn't even notice them until he looked back up at Gus with blurred vision. Quickly, he patted his face dry with his sleeve and preserved the foundation of the makeup. He definitely didn't have time to seal it properly, but he had stolen (he guessed) quality product.

It was a simple fact that Gus had been removed from the gene pool long before he could cause any damage to it. He knew this. He'd (sort of) accepted this. However, that didn't make him feel any less wretched when his alleged son started to tear up. For someone who buttered his bread on other people's grief, he'd never gotten the hang of crying. On those rare occasions when Bart participated in their conversations, he'd tell Gus to get over it. It wasn't his loss, it wasn't his grief, and acting as if it was wasn't going to make him any better at his job, or lesson anyone else's burden. But Gus had never been able to detach himself like his younger brother. He just couldn't stand people crying. It hurt too much.
Gus set his cup and baggie down by his feet and put his hands on the kid's shoulders. "Hey, hey, look, I'm... I'm sorry. I know this is a hard time for you. Really. It's... a strange situation. But, uh, if... if you're real father is around, then we can find him, all right?" Gus nodded encouragingly. He didn't think for a moment that they'd be able to find the kid's real father. He couldn't even guarantee that he knew what was going on, or where they were, or... anything, really. He didn't even know the kid's name. "I'll help you look, I promise. So just..." he sighed. "Please don't cry. It's going to be all right, okay?"
He tried to think of something that would help. "Are you hungry?"

“I’m not crying,” he lied, in the childish way he hadn’t done in years. He was certain he had mastered reigning in his emotions, and the thought of his failure brought pressure back into his face. His makeup was completely ruined and underneath the muddled grey, patches of discolored skin were noticeable. Honestly he looked like a sad clown painting with some underlying and nonsensical political agenda.
For another long while he was silent, like he didn’t hear the question. He was actually quite hungry. (He was always hungry.) It was a good distraction. Just take it. This may or may not be Dad and there was really nothing he could do at this point except ask questions that neither of them had the answers to. Come on, there's nothing left to say. Just move on.
"Yes, I'm very hungry."

Gus patted the boy's shoulder. "Of course not. My mistake." While the kid fell quiet, he bent down and retrieved his baggie, leaving the cup on the ground and pulling out a napkin. "Well, there's more food in here. Do you like pastries?" He held the napkin up to the boy's face and gently dabbed at his eyes. Then he frowned.
Moving faster than intended, he took him by the chin and tilted his head up so he could see better. No, those were almost definitely bruises- it was hard to tell under all that makeup (In fact, he doubted he would have seen it at all if the kid hadn't been crying.), but Gus had some experience with covering bruises. He was familiar with the look.
"What happened?" His voice was genuinely concerned. Gus let his hand fall, then moved to the boy's side and pressed his hand between his shoulder blades, gently guiding him into the cafe. The bell rang as he pushed the door open again.
The cafe was brightly lit through the window, the inner walls apparently a dark wood panel (Though Gus had knocked them for luck, and found them much, much harder than any wood he was familiar with.), and the floor a mystifying shade of lime green. There were empty chairs, empty tables, empty booths and an empty counter, though the pastry case was near-filled with both common and foreign desserts, from croissants to moon cakes to a number of odd-looking pyramids with what were presumably frosting dots on the side.

His father (or not father) actually being sensitive to his emotions was the opposite of what Max had ever experienced. The kind display became filed away in the "not my father" pile of evidence.
The sudden move was unexpected and while Max had done away with the healthy instinct to fight back, he did flinch at the sudden hand near his face. Just as he braced himself for a barrage of questions he was not keen on answering, his dad just... let it go. Truly amazing. He really must not know who Max is. He really must not think he has kids at all. Of the many, many things his dad was not good at, "lying" was up there with "facing his problems". Thankfully this meant he could safely ignore the question. He didn't care to recall the account, anyway.
Max was.... a little more wary about bakeries now. The lime green floor didn't exactly appeal to Max, but at least it wasn't pink and disgusting. The food looked significantly less sugary as well (Max wasn't one for sweets). At least, they looked like they included ingredients other than pure, cheap sugar. After having completely avoiding all of Gus' questions, he asked his own.
"Did you... bake any of these yourself?" He wondered if this Gus still baked at all. It would've been convenient. He would be able to eat a little more freely knowing where his food came from.

Gus waited patiently for an answer, but when none came, he chose to let it slide. Sometimes people didn't want to talk about their problems, and that was fine- if he'd learned anything in his line of work, it was patience, and what answers needed to be chased. He 'hmed' a bit in amusement at Max's question. "Afraid not, I'm not much of a baker. They were here when I found the place. Fresh though." More or less, seeing as he didn't know exactly where they'd been baked. Or when. But they tasted fresh, and that's what was important.
He wondered just how hungry the kid was, it could have been a while since he last ate (Though there was plenty of food if you knew where to look- it had taken Gus several days to discover that, but he didn't expect people to be as slow on the uptake as himself.) Pastries wouldn't make much of a meal, but they should tide him over, regardless.
He slipped around the counter and opened the case. The light scent of sugar and bread wafted out, more due to the sheer number of goods than their warmth or freshness. There were a precious few identification cards in Roman letters, and only one that was even remotely non-gibberish (It read 'beetle'.). "Here, what would you like? I'll get it for you." As he patiently waited for the kid's response, he snapped his fingers. "Oh! I don't think I got your name."
Perhaps they would talk more with a bit of food in them. Maybe then they could sit down and figure out what to do about this 'father' business.
