Alterix did not understand what either of them were saying at this point, but the fact that they were talking about flying, some how actually flying, got through to him well enough. His eyes darted back and forth between his two companions, his brows thinking about creasing but failing to. They weren't crazy. He would've known if they were both crazy by now, right? So maybe there was something that enabled them to fly. Maybe they were from some distant land, over the sea or beyond the mountain ranges.
That was a not a star map, either. He knew what star maps looked like. He could read star maps. He read them all the time when he was getting from place to place. He even read them just for fun. That thing that could emit it's own light, that thing that sparked and cracked like wet wood in a fire pit, that thing was no star map.
His fingers picked at a stray thread on his pants. His feet shuffled on the ground.
They could not fly and that was not a star map.

In southern Syl, polite conversation, even for the truly uninterested, was common practice. People were friendly and conversational as a general rule, so Dulce's attempt at being friendly made a passing grade, (although people's emotions and attitude flew over Darwin's head anyway). And if Darwin weren't friends with a couple of eccentrics himself, Alterix's silence would have been very off-putting. It was only slightly uncomfortable for him. Only government types were like that, but it was obvious he didn't have a government income. A small Columbiana voice said something about conspiracy before he focused on what he remembered for the show.
"Yeah, it's a competition. I, uh, performed pretty well, I think. But I fell asleep before they announced anything. Definitely I placed, though. Going outside of the box for my shows usually treats me well. The continued silence by Tin Man was creeping into Darwin's bubble of happy go lucky. Obviously the solution was to bring him into the conversation. "What about you? What do you do for a living?"

◎◎◎◎◎◎◎ “Ah,” was all Oppenheimer managed to say. Well, there wasn’t anywhere she could go with that, but it seemed like Darwin was making an attempt to bring Tin Man into the discussion anyways. She doubted the successfulness of this tactic, but said nothing of it. Treowthbyteller, Oppenheimer wasn’t much of a talker herself. Who settled anything with words when you could settle it with fists? It had been so long-- too long, that she had a civil conversation with non-belligerents, so she wasn't used to it either. The lack of tension, in itself, was very tense. And she was all-ears now. Oppenheimer turned the other direction to eye the Tin Man from her peripheral. If there was one thing she judged a person on, it was their job. Not necessarily how ‘noble’ (obviously, since most of her jobs were illegal) and ‘significant’ (and again, because a few of her jobs were easily replaceable minimum wage) the job may be in popular opinion, but how much pride and dedication they put into their work. She didn’t really know much about Tin Man, other than that he carried himself like a very acrobatic aristocrat, so she paid close attention to his answer, if there was any.

His ears had filled with a buzzing sound. He stopped looking at the two of them, staring at the crackling fire again. The buzzing noise grew louder and louder. It was the same sound he heard when he was nearly being strangled, or when he knew Master was angry with him, or when Alice stuck her knife into the wrong person, into a pregnant woman. Alterix swallowed and gave his head a little shake. The buzzing noise silenced, just in time for him to hear Darwin's question. All eyes were on him now. It was a very uncomfortable sensation and the hair on his arms prickled because of it. He knew he couldn't keep holding this silence, especially because Dulce seemed particularly on edge whenever it came to him. That much he could sense. Darwin was different. Darwin was stupid. But Darwin did have that sparking, glowing object... but he didn't want to think about that thing too hard. Of course, he couldn't tell the truth about what he really did. Good thing he was an expert liar. The words came out with no hesitation, without a hitch in his breathing, without his face so much as twitching. "I'm a merchant. I deal in rugs, horses, oils, perfumes, and spices." It was a perfect lie, and one that he had used before. It explained why he knew the lay of the land, why he had visited both the northern and southern regions of the land, why he had visited so many different cities. It also explained why he carried so many weapons with him all of the time. Merchants needed to know how to fight in order to protect their wares from robbers and raiders. As long as he could some how think of an excuse as to why the rest of his caravan wasn't currently with him, it worked. Obviously, that part of the lie was easily achieved. They had all just woken up here. It was back... with Alice. Somewhere in the dark, northern forests. Or something. Where here and where back where he had woken up was exactly he didn't know and didn't want to think about too hard. He just didn't want to think about this whole ridiculous situation too hard. "I ride or I walk," he added, eyes narrowing and flicking back and forth between the two of them several times. "I don't fly."

Where Darwin came from, "food" wasn't really meant to be spiced. It was hardly food to begin with. It was more like caloric and nutrient supplements. Cloth rugs were for museums and reenactments.
"Oh, that's neat. I don't know many people who sell exotic goods like that. I'm sorry, I'm not familiar with horses," Darwin admitted. There weren't really horses on Valspar, either. "You should really try flying, though. You haven't lived until you've touched the sky. When we get back I can show you if you'd like!" Naturalist had to be the answer with the easily repairable scars (or Darwin would have so many by now) and suspicion of flight.

◎◎◎◎◎◎◎ Darwin's talk was sentimental. 'Haven't lived until you touched the skies', hmph. Her eyes rolled in their sockets, but as gay as it was, she could related. Maybe not through futuristic planes with fancy names, but... “I say you don't know what's living until you've gone 0 to 100 in 3 seconds in the driver seat of a McLaren F1. I guess it's kind of like flying, only the euphoria is far more direct.” Darwin didn't seem to see what she saw. A dimensional rift or something must have stole them away. A monster that reached into their dreams and made their nightmares in realities. If Umbershaw could do it, then there must be other demons who could do the same. “But I don't think our friend here will have any of that either, Darwin.” The Tin Man was from a world somehow even more backwards than her own. At least Waynites knew that mechanical flight was possible. Sometimes. It was at least a thought for her fellow denizens. The Tin Man's face, as unmoving as it usually seemed to be, managed to budge, slight conforming to expression of utter skepticism and disbelief that many rural Waynites had at the mention of any non-animal powered vehicular transportation. “Where are you from originally, traveller?” she asked more directly, swiveling towards the Tin Man. “Must have been pretty different than all these places you've been and seen, huh?"To be honest, she didn't know how to introduce the concept that they all from different worlds to them. Darwin might be more open to it. Maybe he could believe in... wormholes or something. People were already talking about it in 1990s Earth at least. Alterix? He already looked like he was ready to grab a pitchfork and impale Darwin for all his talk of witchcraft and godderned flyin' machines.

Nothing. They. Were. Saying. Made. Sense.
He couldn't listen to this any more. Both of them seemed to understand what the other was saying and that just made it worse. He was feeling like the crazy one here even if he most certainly was not. The only sign of distress was a hand that went to his temple, his fingernails scraping across his scalp briefly before he suddenly stood up.
"I'm...going to go to sleep," he said, hastily, and hurried away from the flames. Seating himself a little ways off and out of the light, he set himself at the base of a tree and shut his eyes.
Because when he woke up in the morning, this would all be gone. It would all be over with and he'd be back home again.

When Darwin woke up the next day, he felt his stomach complain at him for missing his evening supplements. His scarf was bundled up under his head as a makeshift pillow and he, not used to sleeping on solid surfaces, felt quite stiff that morning. That was okay, though, there were many a time he would pass out on his workbench or hunched over a plane, so it didn't bother him much. He briefly wondered if reservations even had nutrition dispensers, but that was very quickly replaced by his awe at the beauty of the morning. The only light came from the sky above them, and the way if filtered through the tree tops was beautiful and mystical to him. After a couple moments of following particles floating through the light, he looked around to see if his new friends were also awake.

◎◎◎◎◎◎◎ Oppenheimer was always first to wake. She didn't get much in the way of sleep. Though she didn't worry about her occupational responsibilities, her sleep schedule was now programmed into her biology, as unhealthy as it was. Not to mention, she had two new responsibilities to worry about instead: Tin Man and Darwin. She didn't think they were going to stab her in her sleep. Instead, she took too fretting over her new companions like it was her duty to support and guard them. As soon as the aching rays of sun peeped over the horizon, she was awake. It was curious, however. It reminded her of the light back at home, in Wayne, instead of the light on Earth. There didn't seem to be a sun. No singular burning mass of gases. Just ambient, atmospheric light. That was enough to agitate her sensitive Waynite eyes though. She assumed it was... dawn? before she woke, but specific times never mattered to her-- not like it did Eorthelans. Waynites had a poor sense of time, and even with a mind dedicated to duty (work shifts and wages were entirely dependent on time!), Oppenheimer wasn't immune to this lack of foreknowledge. The first thing she did was consider her unofficial team mates. They would probably be hungry in the morning. People had 'breakfast' at this time, the first thing when they woke up. She never observed this dietary practice, if due to her own clashing customs and not even having food in the first place. It seems she was at this conundrum again. No food. But this time it wasn't because she couldn't afford it. It was because it simply wasn't there. She supposed she could go hunting, but she only had a wrench. She'd have to craft something, like a spear. Alternatively, she could set traps, but she didn't know a thing about trickier practices of that nature (or any nature; she just wasn't a 'tricky' person). Oppenheimer didn't wake either of them. They were probably tired. She didn't think it would be stupid to go off on her own in the near darkness of the strange woods. She wasn't afraid of anything the forest might hold at twilight hours. While she was unfamiliar with the place, she wasn't unfamiliar with the feel. She went ahead and gathered some stones for spearheads and long sticks for the shafts. She didn't really know what to look for, but she often heard flint was the best for this sort of thing. She took some viney plants with her in hopes one of them knew something about making rope out of the fibers, because she certainly didn't. She only new it was something you could do. The more she thought about, the more Oppenheimer realized she wasn't really cut out for this survivalist gig, but she was going to try her very damn best with what little she did know. When she returned, she saw Darwin was now awake as well.
“Uh. Finally awake, Sleeping Beauty? I can smell your morning breath from here.”She was as charming as warthog, but only half as ugly. She didn't approach him. Instead, she propped herself against a tree and set the rocks and plants about her, except for one stone. She started smacking it with her wrench, chipping off bits in pieces in an attempt to achieve a sharpened edge.

The sound of something metal smacking against stone made him jump awake. Alterix scrabbled at the earth around him for a sword that was not there before he bounced to his feet, staring around for the noise before he finally settled his gaze on Dulce. He stood there, his chest heaving up and down twice before he finally relaxed.
He was still in this weird situation with these people he didn't know. He was not in his tent with Alice. He was still here in this weird place with no supplies. He didn't even have shoes. He didn't even have a knife. He was still here with the woman and the man with the odd devices.
He swallowed, reaching to brush pine needles off of himself. If he was still here he was going to have to worry about finding his way out of this place. If he was still here, then it was best to begin concentrating on making sure that he didn't die. That meant finding food, water, and hopefully supplies so they weren't completely unarmed and he wasn't barefoot.
Alterix looked up again at Dulce. She was hitting a rock with her club. What that would do, especially with the rock in your hands, he didn't know. Clubs were for breaking things after all. Right?
"What are you doing?"
