Lukas watched Jimmy extract himself from his arm with an expression of mild curiosity and maybe a little disgust. The sight of blood squirting from his new injuries however seemed to illicit a bit more of a reaction out of him. Lukas made a sucking noise with his teeth, reaching over to slap his uninjured hand to the wound. He applied firm pressure, brows furrowed. He looked a few shades paler now than he had started out as, both from the loss of blood as well as the sight of his own blood spraying all over the goddamn place like he was in some sort of horror game, but was pretty steady on his feet and otherwise unaffected by the whole ordeal.
If he was any more skilled with healing magic and under the impression it would have worked in the first place, Lukas would have gone ahead and fixed himself up. Going about regrowing skin when he didn't have the best medical knowledge in the first place was just not a good idea. That he left to Cain.
Lukas laughed a little at the question even if he was trying to hold his own blood inside of himself. "Vitch or varlock is no longer, uh, politically correct term. Zhat is for uh, very old days. Old times. Older than your times."
He licked his lips. "They call zhem vitches and varlocks still in 1863? American mages are such strange tings." He tried to smile again but it came off more as a grimace. "Similar geography is nice. At least have somezhings in common. I am from Odeskog family. There are no ozher Odeskog though, and you vould probably know me just from first name and saying is mage. Zhen again, family may not even exist vhere you are from, so. Just be useless and no meanings."
Lukas shrugged his shoulders. "But old people think family and heritage is important, yah? Strange because you are not old looking but is older zhan I am. But maybe our two vorlds not be running at same time, so maybe vhe are same age? Agh. Confusing. Never like studying zheeze thing vhen I was little. I like very simple. Boom. Fire. Simple. Put together, grind up and boil and make little potion to make hair pink. Very simple. I leave this for Soul Scribe to ponder is his job."
Lukas was rambling because blood was slowly trickling over his fingers and falling to the rainforest floor. He remembered dying and he didn't want that to happen again. If that was dying. He had died, right? "You uh, feel better?"

◈◈◈◈◈◈◈ She didn't know what 'politically correct' mean. Witches and warlocks were hardly mentioned as actual terms in political matters, even if many politicians were warlocks. She assumed he meant it was 'wrong' or 'inappropriate for polite, standard discourse'. “Thass a quare thang indeed. Mother had no problem identifyin' herself as a witch tah me or anyone else. *'Be a--'” she caught herself slipping back in a female persona, but quickly corrected herself before she made such a mistake. “'a warlock, it would make mummy so proud.' But I guess I could see where that would be problematic. Acourse she never identified 'erself as such tah anyone of dem ignorants. Dey never did take too kindly tah our sorts. Guess its tha stigma dat surrounds it by certain, popular religious groups.”
She could see (and smell) that he was losing blood still, after she retracted and becoming light-headed in the process. She then felt very terrible, even for a self-serving monster of pride and greed. She could at least recognize his generosity, and her gluttony might cost her in the future, if he ever decided to let her feed on him again. If he even survived. “I'm so sorry! I ain't got no bandages though, not no more.” She shifted her weight, pressing the tips of her index fingers against each other. “I'm feelin' mighty better. Wish I-I could make ya feel better too, somehow, but I wadn't dat studious neither.” She had the same feeling as when she was with Willard. If she listened to her dear old mother, then things might be easier for her.
“I ran outta personal supplies a while back after tha retreat. I don't think it'd be wise ta let a novice try a hand at your wound neither. I... don't even know how omnipotent my power source would be anyhow.”
That was a weird thought. Demons could transcend dimensions, couldn't they? They existed before the Fall, before 'dimensions' existed, so they should be unaffected by such petty differences. “Speakin' of which, my mother's a Dooright. Father's a Zmejavic, but he don't really do that sorta thang no more. Don't even go by that name no more either. Bein' dead kinda puts a damper on bein' a zmejavit. Then again, I cain't say if this means anythang ta you. I didn't recognize yer family's name, and Scandinavian witchin' families are the only ones I'm familiar with outside of the British ones.”
But she didn't recognize his name, and he likely didn't recognize her, as prominent as it was. She didn't know if she could believe that demons would be the same if the families weren't. It was worth a try though, she figured. “How good are you at magick?” He could maybe summon someone, maybe, if that theory proved true... except, she didn't know how he'd even fair for the next thirty minutes. Desanguination was a very real threat now, and that survival was more important now than making it back home. But she didn't really know how to stop the bleeding. He apparently didn't either, and he was a 'mage'. “Um, here!” she looked down to see across her chest, that even if she didn't have anything of use in her haversack, she still have the sack itself. She could use the sling of it as a temporary tourniquet. She threw off the bag and held either sides of the sling in her hands, presenting it forwardly so he may put his arm through the loop and she could wrap it around to cut off the circulation to his artery. *complete with an affected posh British accent

Lukas looked him up and down, wondering if under the outer appearance of a decaying corpse and the layer of dirt he would’ve recognized them. “Your mudder vas a mage?” Lukas asked, but the talk of religious groups had him confused. “No, I dun zhink I ‘ave heard of zhe family but, I am not going to the council meetings any more. Too busy for it all.” Still, he didn’t have much time to focus on names or what they were talking about with religious groups. It probably wasn’t good that he was bleeding so much. It also probably wasn’t good that his blood was essentially running like water over his arm and fingers.
Magic use meant things just didn’t work as well as they should sometimes.
“I like to zhink I am okay at it,” he said, extending his arm toward them so they could wrap the loop around it. There was no way he was about to mention that he was, for whatever reason, unable to make use of his abilities. He’d be better off with them thinking he could spout fire from his hands for a time. “But bleeding I do not think is best time to be doing the magics.”

◈◈◈◈◈◈◈ “I was jus'... jus' curious!” She slapped herself in the face. "Argh, don't worry about it!"Jimmy tied the sling around arm tight. The contents spilled out-- most notably the little 'trophies' she picked up from their victories She pulled it tight as she could, but his muscles were too dense. And it was still bleeding. Maybe his initial injuries were too severe for the amount of blood she took from him? She had a shirt, a shell jacket, a pair of pants, underwear, and some linen wraps. She had to contemplate whether are not she was thankful enough to offer up her clothes. Ultimately she decided she wasn't that selfish. “Wait a moment.” She ran behind the tree to disrobe. Her jacket was too hot, and dirty, and it just wasn't the best at absorbing liquids. Her shirt and linens were perfect though. She pulled the billowy bib shirt off her bony chest along with the linen wraps. After that, she coated herself in the shell jacket and rebuttoned it all the way to the top (despite the heat) before returning. “Here.” She handed him the pile of fabric to him. “Use these to soak up tha blood.”

Lukas' lips curled up slightly as he grimaced at the makeshift tourniquet. He didn't know if it was the fact he was losing so much blood that had him queasy or the fact that he was seeing so much of it. Either way, he was quite sure he was going to lose what little contents his stomach did contain. Lukas backed up a few steps to press his shoulder against a nearby tree to keep himself standing upright.
Jimmy asked him to wait before running to duck behind a tree. Lukas sighed. They were probably sneaking off into the jungle now that they'd had their fill and leaving him to die. That's what he got for trusting a vampire. Maybe they were going to scuttle up a tree and spring down on him to finish him off or something. None of that happened, however.
Jimmy reappeared a few moments later, tossing him a pile of fabric. Lukas blinked down at it, then up at Jimmy, and then began to wind the shirt around his arm. "Help me a little? Hard vith only vun hand."
Old people were so strange and prude they couldn't undress in front of someone else even if they were just planning on bandaging them up.

◈◈◈◈◈◈◈ Jimmy nodded. The reason she didn't want to shred the article herself was because she was afraid she might not be strong enough to tear it. She didn't want to further embarrass herself. Gripping the fabric between the dull, awkward bones of her fingertips, she rend the shirt into strips. She used the pieces to swathe up the blood before wrapping the linens around his forearm. “I'm sorry, I didn't mean fer none of this tah happen....” She tugged the brim of her hat over her face.

Lukas shrugged his shoulders like nearly bleeding out in the middle of the jungle happened to him every other day, watching Jimmy wrap his arm with what was finally mild concern. He licked his lips nervously, hoping to goodness that the the bandages and strap would help stop the bleeding. "Does zhis typically 'appen?" he asked. "When you snack?" Bitten by a vampire or not Lukas knew that it probably just wasn't the fact that hed been fed on that was causing the problem. There were advantages to being a mage but there were also severe disadvantages and though Lukas had avoided the typical bodily deterioration in some ways it appeared as though he was suffering the effects of lifelong magic usage in other respects. His blood was thin.
Raising his arm, he inspected the makeshift bandage and tightened the strap further on his arm. Hopefully it wouldn't soak through with blood right away. "Should 'ave used my shirt for it. Too hot for jungle anyway. I am sorry, I have a little panic and do not thinking."
Lukas straigtened as much as he could, scanning the surrounding foliage briefly before looking back at Jimmy. "Should try to stick together now, huh? Good teamwork. This is no doing me so well last time I try to make team but try, try again. Is all I or you can do. You been in jungle for long while? You have somewhere you stay or did just find self here?"
Shelter from what looked like an oncoming rain shower was probably a good idea but Lukas also wanted details of Jimmy's experience here. Maybe they had also encountered an angry sky snake.

◈◈◈◈◈◈◈ “No, not all!” This all happened because she decided to drink from the wrong blood vessel. “It's okay, I-I fucked it up, I should be the one who pays fer it!” And it certainly didn't equal the costs. She gulped and nodded at his suggestion, and as much as she'd like to trust his plan, she had no faith in their setting and circumstances. She sighed, then continued. “I had a temporary shelter – me en ma friend did – but I don't even know what direction it's in no more! When tha first rain poured on in, a mist grew so thick we gots lost in it! It made no sense! It was like we got transported from where we was previously! Ya see, we were investigatin' the edge of tha jungle, en I know it wadn't a dream, er everything else here would be too, but it isn't! We saw tha ends of tha earth en then a rainstorm separated us and placed me elsewhere! I ain't see nuthin like I was last, so I'm just completely en utterly lost!”
She could smell the rain on the air, and so she knew another wretched pljusak was going to blow in. The last thing she wanted was to lose Lukas too. She wrung her hands, staring at the ground as she swayed. “I'-I'm afraid we'll get lost from each other, like last time...”

“No, no. Is fine. No one pay for anything. Hey, hey, slow down,” Lukas said, stepping toward Jimmy and raising his hands up. The poor man had probably spent so long in the jungle at this point in a state of starvation he was a little delirious. “Hey. Is alright. Calm down and breathe. Is okay.”
He would have taken the story they told him as a result of the delirium if it didn’t sound so close to what had happened to him. But Lukas didn’t think now was the best time to mention that he had experienced something quite similar but with a disappearing giant frog man. Reaching out, he took one of Jimmy’s hands placing his other hand on his shoulder and patting him a few times.
“It’s okay. We just not let go of each other, yah? Then even if is fog, then we can’t be separated. Slow down and tell what happened again. Edge of zhe verld is vhat you say?”
He turned to begin trudging through the jungle, dragging Jimmy behind him. Raindrops had begun to fall down onto his arms and the top of his head. They were going to get soaked.

◈◈◈◈◈◈◈ She gulped down a deep breath and exhaled slowly. “Okay, okay...”She gripped his hand tight in her own. She was kind of embarrassed because her hands were so small and weak compared to his (though thankfully not rotting anymore), a pitiful excuse for a man's hands, but it was comforting. She liked that she didn't have to be the big, strong one this time, because he had that job covered for her. With Willard, she had to big and strong, and she just wasn't that. She wasn't even that when she was healthy. She signed and leaned the side of his arm. “This jungle is an island in the air,” she stated with her cheek pressed against his shoulder. She furrowed her brow, watching her feet move beneath her as they walked. “If I remember right, therr were... roots. Roots on tha underside uh tha island like tha legs ova table. Or better yet, tha riggin' ova great ship. I don't know what they're anchored to, or where they go, but I saw 'em. May 'ave been an ocean cast below, but I wasn't focused on it. There were too many clouds in tha way, and it's hard tah tell the violet of the sky from tha purple waters here. Either way, I never did saw nuthin like it in all my time.”

This was a disturbing and unfortunate development.
“In zhe air?” he repeated, brows furrowing. “Roots? Ocean? Oh. Is very--strange island this sounds. I was in big City. Great big City. Completely empty zho. I voke up in a marsh vith a frogman but zhen I valked to City vith him and ve vhere there for little while then--”
Lukas stopped talking for a moment, adjusting his hold on Jimmy so that he could pull them tighter to himself. Holding hands with men didn't seem to bother him at all.
"Zhen I voke up again but somevhere else. This time I vas in giant, stone arena. I look up in sky and there is giant snake. Massive. Lots of feathers. Then he says fight to death or die yourself. I find there is just kid. Only kid, I cannot kill kid. So I refuse. And then--I guess I died."
Lukas blinked.
"Zhen I voke up here and find you. You 'ave seen no snake? I think is demon. I think."

◈◈◈◈◈◈◈ She laughed. It was a weak, pathetic laugh, but a laugh nonetheless. “Frog man, huh?” That was precious, truly precious. It seemed like this place was just full of talk animals. “I was with a weaselboy. A sailor. What you call that if not an Able Seaman? An Able Seaweasel? Reckoned he might've been a member of the Seelie Court, but he had no glamors er nuthin. Guess it makes more sense iffen we're from different places altogether.”He pulled her closer to him and she let out a quiet 'oh'. It was comforting, honestly. She felt protected. At the same time this marked him as a flaming homosexual. She didn't know if that was conforming or not. Even less comforting was this news about this massive, feathery sky serpent. “Ain't heard of no giant sky snake,” she replied, shaking her head. “I mean, I've sawed some purty impossible creatures in this here jungle, but nuthin of tha likes you speak. What you mean doe? Like a zmaj? Or some other serpentine dragon?” She looked at Lukas in his deteriorated condition, her eyes stuck to the injury on his arm. She pulled her lips back into a frown. “I don't think we kin find a proper shelter with ya bleedin' like that. You keep movin', yer gonna bleed out more. We kin jus' bivouac.” It was a meek offer, but one she felt was preferable to trekking the rainforest for unknown hours. “Trus' me, it ain't that bad, I've done it plenty uh times in this sorta weather.”

“Veaselboy sailor. Sounds like fairy tale alright. Ve ‘ave all zhe talking animals, all we need now is fairy princess and charming man. Then would be perfect tale,” Lukas smiled weakly. “No, not zmaj.”
He was surprised Jimmy even knew what that was. He was surprised he even remembered what that was. Dragons had been extinct for a very, very long time, but there were still mentions of them in some of the older books in his father’s house. “More like Mesoamerican. It had feathers. You know. Quetzalcoatl. I guess is what demon chooses for his form. Feathered serpents dead for long time where I am from forever. You still have dragons? You know many things for just old soldier in America. Just got lucky vith vitch mom, I guess?”
Lukas stopped. “I do not know bivouac word, but am guessing that you mean just stop and make self some camp.”
He peered into the trees around Jimmy and for the first time it was obvious that he was at least a little bit afraid of this jungle. “I do not vant to sleep.”
Sleeping meant, to Lukas anyway, the possibility of ending up somewhere new. He did not want to be anywhere new right now. He wanted to stay with this nice-enough-vampire-man and talk about long dead dragon breeds.

“Well, iffin yer willin' ta play tha princess, I do reckon I make fer a charmin' man!” Jimmy pressed her hand to her chest, then snorted and spat at the ground. Old, dry phlegm was the worst. She then wiped her arm across her mouth and pondered the thought of this so-called 'ketsulcovatil'. “Nah, dragons are fer days of tha old, but my father's line is supposedly descended from one. That was a long ago, acourse. From my understandin'... the last dragon died during the Crusades against those dirty, nasty, filthy Mohammedans.”
He said she was pretty knowledgeable for an old American soldier, and it's true. She was, but the longer she was a soldier, the more she realized she had no place being there. She was so stupid. She neglected her study and ran away to fight a fight she had no business concerning herself with. She felt like a guilty, sorry piece of shit. “But thass only from what I know about 'em.” She shrugged, scratching the back of her neck. “Ye, but not as much as I should. I shoudn't... really be a sol--”She left the topic right then and there. What was she thinking! Of course she was meant to fight this fight! And she couldn't wait to get back home to fight some more!
“I mean, I don't know whatchya mean by 'Quetzalcoatl'. My mother's a British witch, and my father was a Serbian one from way back in the time of Lazar's Morava, so I don't know a damned thing of Mesoamerican magic and monsters.”She halted when he came to a stop, then looked up to study his features. He looked worried, though she couldn't fault him for it. So was she. She couldn't have been here longer than three days, but it felt like months, maybe even years. “Well, thass about right. You don't hafta sleep. We kin jus' sit en rest. But if you want tah keep movin', I'll march, by Goshen!”

He shook his head, continuing to trudge through the humid jungle in the rain. "No, keep going. When I am tired, I can sit. I am not tired."
Lukas smiled weakly at the remark. "I have played Princess before is not too difficult for me."
"Descended from dragon, though?" He sure hoped that the dragons that came from Jimmy's world were more intelligent than the dragons that he had read about in old bestiaries. The thought of anyone being descended from what were essentially animals was more than a little disturbing. Best not to ask too much about his family history there if he was incorrect in that assumption.
He honestly didn't know what a Mohammedan was supposed to be though. Ah well. "Sometimes people say they still see them in mountains in far off places but I do not think this is such time to be good for dragons any more. Better for everyone if they are dead, I think. Less fires to put out and not as many stolen livestock."
Lukas glanced over at him as he started talking and then quickly changed the subject. Not supposed to be a soldier, was that what they were going to say? Maybe whatever war they were in was going to his head a little. Maybe they didn't think they were cut out for a soldiering job? Still, as a vampire it was probably pretty nice to be a soldier. You were faster, stronger, and harder to kill against whoever else came against you, assuming they were human. That sounded like the perfect soldier. He didn't know enough about Jimmy's situation to really begin to try to judge or understand it though, and decided it best to not press the issues.
"My father had very good extensive library. He liked monsters. That's what he did. Exterminated monsters. Is vhat I do, now. Is my job to know all about everything," Lukas said with a shrug. "So these are thing I know."
The rain suddenly began to pour from the sky in a great torrent. Lukas ducked his shoulders beginning to walk faster as he pulled his shirt up over his head as much as he could. "Ahhhh, maybe finding place for camp now is best." Ahead, through the pouring rain Lukas could make out a shape between the closely growing trees. It was solid, dark, and flat reaching up toward the sky. A building of some sort. "Oh, this is lucky! We see vhat is and stay there?!"
