◈◈◈◈◈◈◈ Jimmy wasn't sure how she felt about Lukas now. She wondered if he was luring her into a false sense of security when he let her feed from him, so he could strike her while she was vulnerable. He admitted he was one of them. He was a hunter. Her family fled to America to avoid persecution at the hands of hunters, and he was one of them. She never been this close to a hunter before, but now she had the opportunity to observe their wrongness. He thought dragons were better off dead. She didn't understand how people could be so stupid. Dragons killed hali. Hali destroyed crops with their hail storms; dragons protected humans. Was it really so much to ask for a cow every now and then? It's almost as bad as those stereotypes which describe dragons as perverted predators that preyed on young women. Most girls would think it an honor to be courted by a dragon. She wanted to let go of Lukas's hand, but she was shamefully afraid to be on her own, even if he was a hunter. He was at least sentient-- reasonable. She didn't want to be alone again. So she held tight and ran forward towards the building, hoping he'd keep up with her. If he couldn't, she wouldn't be strong enough to string him along. She was limited to his speed. She knew exactly what it was that he referred too. It was the ruined temple she took shelter in one stormy night. It's where the other dhampyr hid with her. “This is where I met Mal,” she stated. “He let me feed on 'im too. He was a dhampyr, but not like me. He was tryna avoid the rain as well.”Mal was a generous stranger, yet by the definition of most, he would be a 'monster' too. Dhampyrs were monsters, that's what the hunters thought. Mal was a monster. Jimmy was a monster. Lukas exterminated (that sounded even worse than 'kill'; it implied he thought they were little more than insects) monsters. The longer she mulled over it, the more it offended her. She pressed her back against the cool stone wall, frowning. She looked down, steaming over the thought, then outburst. “Don't you try me, hunter. I ain't gonna be a victim today, tomorrow, or ever.” Jimmy cracked her knuckles at her sides and gulped. “I mayn't be in tha finest of conditions, but I promise you, that makes me all tha more dangerous.” At the same time, she didn't want to make enemies. She was just scared. She rather be an enemy than a victim.

Lukas, unaware of Jimmy's rising sense of insecurity, picked up a steady jog alongside him in the direction of the building. He had to duck his head to enter the temple, but he managed to not scrape his head on the low door frame. Lukas quickly glanced around the building, noting the jungle trees growing up through the tiles on the floor and out of the ceiling. The roof was leaky, but it was still better than staying in that downpour outside. "Oh, so three types of vampire there is so far. Very exciting."
As Lukas brushed water from his brow and out of his eyes, he suddenly felt Jimmy's hand slip out of his. Turning, he found his companion with their back against the wall giving him something of a warning. Oops. Monster hunter where they were from probably had an entirely different connotation. Vampire hunting in Lukas' world was strictly forbidden unless the vampire was acting as an active threat against humanity. The Mage Law was new, but closely followed and so far no breach of conduct had been documented. It was, as a mage, illegal to actively hunt and kill vampires unless they were threatening them or threatening humanity. The mage code had taken a long time to be put into effect and Lukas remembered his father coming home exhausted from week long consul meetings late in the night as the code was being implemented. Vampires at mage consuls had caused something of a stir and though some mages were willing to accept what they were proposing, others just refused to break out of the thoughts and the feelings of the old times.
"I do not hunt vampires," Lukas said, shaking his head and raising his arms into the air. "Mages have not killed a vampire in a very long time. No, no, no. I work hunting demons. This is different. You know zhem?"

◈◈◈◈◈◈◈ Jimmy sighed, sliding down the wall and slumping down on the floor. She fingered the joints between the stone slab flooring. All the while she just hummed as he spoke as if she was ignoring him, but she was actually listening. He wasn't helping himself either. Demons, from her understanding were like... patron saints. You sacrificed a few goats or infants and they would appear to you after the ritual to help you with whatever you needed. Though, the more she thought of it, they were more like a supernatural servicer that had to be paid in odd currency. Regardless, they weren't malevolent or evil-- not like they were commonly portrayed to be. They just had terrible publicity and most people just didn't understand them. Sometimes you had to crack a few baby skulls to make progress. Sometimes it was through the moral obscurity of war, sometimes it was through the starkness of demonic assistance. Who was he, or anyone, to judge otherwise? She met one, but could only pronounce the name of another she heard in passing. She didn't want to answer that question directly, rather alluding to it in a somewhat distant manner.
“Whaddaya think of Forcalor?” she asked.

Lukas wanted to investigate this strange temple but he didn't feel all that great at the present time. Losing a rather considerable amount of blood did that to you. Besides that, he had a funny feeling that his companion wasn't all that happy with him right now either and might just go ahead and try something unintelligent if he turned his back to them for too long. Lukas sat himself on what at one point had been a pillar holding the ceiling up but now was just a block of stone. His arm had finally stopped bleeding. Lukas carefully undid the strap that Jimmy had wrapped around his arm because his fingers were going numb. He needed to keep himself from bleeding out, he didn't need to lose his fingers.
"Forcalor?" he said, flexing his fingers. "Aha, vhich Forcalor? Zhere is maybe three that I know, but probably only one real one now, huh? Demons are funny about names, understandable. I vould be too if people could always tell me that to do all the time with my real one. It does not sound like fun to be that way."
Lukas looked up at Jimmy, "Vhy is this a demon that you know?"

◈◈◈◈◈◈◈ “I couldn't tell ya which. Don't know his, uh, callin' sign.”
Hugging her legs to her chest, she circled her finger on the center of a stone slab, over and over again. “He looked like a man the times I saw him,” she mumbled. This was only a half-truth. She seen him in other forms before, but she wanted to know if they were thinking of the same demon before she could confirm the link. “You know how demons are.”
Should she really answer this question honestly? He admitted that he hunted demons. The most important thing about that statement was not that he didn't hunt vampires, but demons-- it was that he hunted demons at all. “I dunno,” she answered, shrugging her shoulders sheepishly. “How do you know 'im? All of the ones you met, that is.”

"Oh ya, they like to stay looking like man but usually there is something not right. You know, freaky eyes, slitty like cats. They do that a lot," Lukas nodded his head thoughtfully. "Well, one was a shadow. Must have been young one because usually they are muuuch harder to kill. Introduced as Forcalor, I don't know vhere he picked up that name? But he was hiding in not-nice part of town during the day and sucking souls at night. Dante, my partner, and I hear this go looking. Find him all veird and twitchy and foamy because this is how they are when are young and so there was a lot of yelling and smacking and fireballs and then he was stupid and never svitched back to be person when sun comes up. Up he went in smoke! Sun best thing for killing shadow but they are so hard to catch because they do that poof here poof there--thing."
Lukas shrugged.
"There was another one too. Some sort of fire associated something, I do not know. But never got him just did some hearing from some lesser demons associated with him. And the other I read in book somevhere. Old old old demon. I have never met him but hear he is large, very big, and live in ocean. Is why is hard to find because ocean is big."
Lukas clearly did not know that where she came from, demons didn't work like that at all.

◈◈◈◈◈◈◈ She listened to him ramble on and nodded. She had no idea what he meant by 'shadows', but she supposed they were some sort of lesser demon, especially if they were disposed of by something as simple as sunlight. Not even most vampires were effected by that, despite popular belief. However, the latter description tugged on something in her chest. “Eh... I s'pose yer right, more or less. Tha Forcalor I met wuz our--” she stopped. He was one of her family's, the Dooright's, patron demons. She remembered quite well what he looked like. As a man, he was very average looking. Sandy blond hair, and hazel green eyes. He was neither too tall, nor too short, too fat, or too thin. His features were nothing noteworthy, very proportional. Symmetrical. Almost ideal, if he was too... boring. But upon entry into their home, his figure morphed into something more substantial, looking more statuesque and classically masculine and to a degree, handsome. But most importantly-- he had large feathered wings like Steller's sea eagle. He was very big in this form as well, but she never seen him as something truly leviathan. “He wuz a demon of sea en wind en storms. Boatblesser. Shipsinker...”

Lukas cocked an eyebrow slightly. Was her what? Was their what? He was starting to get the feeling that there was a bit more to this Jimmy and demons business than they were letting on. Especially since they had actually met one and talked to one. There honestly wasn't much reason to be meeting and talking to demons unless you were killing them or bargaining with them. Some mages got into that. Some people who weren't mages got into that. Both were very dangerous and bad news.
Lukas didn't want to appear upset by this however. Besides, he didn't know the nature of the interaction them and the demon had had and what it meant where ever they were from. Honestly it wasn't going to help him any by condemning them for interacting with demons when he didn't know the whole story. He was hurt, he was hungry, he was tired and he was confused. He needed someone else to watch his back and he needed to get as much information about them out of them about this place as he possibly could. It was best for the two of them to just put that behind themselves and focus on surviving and figuring out what had happened to them.
"Ohhh. Ya. Makes sense. You go, uh, sailing often? Is why? Have tea parties vith him for good sailing day? I thought you were soldier, not navy?"

◈◈◈◈◈◈◈ She mulled over the question for a moment, thinking of the best way to answer it. Well, it seemed he had a sneaking suspicion of the sort of that intimacy her family had with demons and their ilk. She still didn't want to confirm it, forgetting anything he said about the demon and vaguely offering him an explanation for his next inquiry. “All the men before me, on my mother's side of tha family, they're all seafarin' men. Naval officers. I'm tha first one in my mother's line ta be a soldier. Artilleryman. Actually, my family don't even know that I am a soldier...”
That was all true. For as long as she could remember, all the males through that branch pursued careers in the Royal Navy. Another branch dedicated themselves to 'soldiering', whether it be infantry, cavalry, or artillery, like herself. Yet, she could admit she was a vampire, and still feel uncomfortable with disclosing her biological sex.

"Oh."
Lukas blinked. That didn't make much sense. Telling someone that you were going into the army to possibly die defending your country definitely seemed like something that you would try to make sure your entire family knew about. Maybe Jimmy didn't have that good of a relationship with their family?
"You are not close vith them, I guess? Or other reason?"
Lukas could understand not being close with your family. He wasn't close to his. Then again, his family was dead and it was sort of hard to be close to them now.
"Ohhh. Sounds like interesting job. Can understand somevone else who makes things go BOOM. Is also my job."
Lukas grinned. He was trying really hard to be polite and nice.

◈◈◈◈◈◈◈ “Nah, I was very close to 'em,” Jimmy said, sorrow heavy on her voice. “I loved my family...”She sighed, not taking her eyes off the stone beneath her. “So much so, I'd hate tah disappoint them, en surely, this will disappoint them. They wouldn't have wanted me tah enlist as a common powdermonkey. They wanted me ta go to school instead.”For a split second, a smirk graced her lips. “But yeah, blowin' shit up is far more interestin' than runnin' 'round in hoop skirts en corsets--”She paused, then gulped. “I uh, I was tah be a tailor,” she appended with a wave of her hand, as if that would correct the implication of her previous statement. She twirled her finger against the stone quicker. “Anyways, a 12-pounder Napoleon will make a lot of thangs go boom. The one I manned was one was wrought by the Yanks, but ain't no shame in it. We captured that sunnuvagun fair-and-square, and they jus' always have more than us. They always have more than us, 'cept fer know-how. And honor.” She wished she still had that cannon with her now. Even if it took at least a five man crew to operate it smoothly, she was just fine loading and firing it all on her own. So long as she had something that gave her the edge and a sense of familiarity.

The hoop skirts and corsets slip up did not get past Lukas. His eyebrows raised when Jimmy said it, his expression of surprise slowly turning to one of amusement before he gave a snort of laughter. "I do not know, this sounds like many fun days. If this is thing you do then is fine with me, not the only man in the vorld that has I'm sure. I mean, maybe be hard for me to get into corset but, you is smaller than I. Would not be so hard. It would probably do nice for figure for both of us."
Lukas shrugged his shoulders, apparently completely okay with the thought of soldier men running around in corsets. "I never went to school, taught at home. I don't know, school back then maybe not so nice? But uh, Yanks? Napoleon? But he is French and not American? Oh, confusing. Like, eh, this is not thing I know about this war. I am very sorry. Lost to me."

◈◈◈◈◈◈◈ Lukas was proving to be a really quare feller, quarer than she originally thought. Of course, she wouldn't say that-- just think it, but her thoughts were advertized all over her dirty face. Maybe he was just being funny. And nice, but she awkwardly chuckled at his comment as if she was trying hard not sound a little bewildered by it. The thought of men in hoop skirts and corsets confused her Victorian sensibilities, but it tickled the imagination. She supposed if women could crossdress as men, then men could crossdress as women (though why would they need to?) -- even outside of theatre. Actually the idea of a big handsome man in woman's clothes was somewhat 'appealing' in ways she shouldn't be appealed, and so she hid her face in her arms. At least they weren't talking about patron demons anymore. He seemed just as confused as her though. Like with that able seaweasel, Willard. He didn't understand anything about the second American war of independence. Yankees to Europeans were both Northerners and Southerners, but to her, a 'damn Yankee' only meant those bastards abover the Mason-Dixon line. “Yeah, he is, but tha cannons we used are based on the models used during tha Napoleonic conquest.” she mentioned. Virgil's obsession with military history seemed to come in handy sometimes. “ In French, it's called canon obusier de 12.” She twirled an imaginary mustache, then continued. “It's called a 12 pounder because it shoots 12 pound projectiles. Now at tha time of tha Napoleonic Wars, thass tah say through 1803 en 1815, 12 pounds were tha larges' caliber of all long-barreled field pieces. It was very versatile. You could load these cannons with round shot at fortifications or case shot at men in the field, on foot or on horseback. These cannons are smooth bore, which means tha shot won't spin like if it was inserted in a rifled cannon. Now, that can be a problem: spinnin' projectiles are more accurate en they gots more distance, but rifled canons are much harder tah manufacture-- they require precision, en iffin you do it wrong... well, yer better off with a smoothbore. Once, we used a 20 pound Parrott rifle! It was one we were glad tah captured, but it was a pain in tha arse ta move. We achally dinnit have enough horses ta transport it, en so we reorganized en sent it off ta 'nother battery that could. Tha 12 pounder is much more 'daptable, I think. Theys certainly don't get stuck in mud as easily.”
She paused, readjusting her hat. “Sorry fer ramblin' there.”

Lukas was so used to being looked at because he was "quare" it didn't even affect him. He just grinned at her like he was proud he had managed to perplex her with his ability to talk about running around in a corset and not give a shit.
Lukas' eyebrows raised as she rambled on and on about military canons and projectiles. Lukas didn't really follow a good chunk of what she was saying, but was doing his best to appear as though he was listening and interested. Because he was polite. Or something. When she finally finished he shrugged, waving a hand at her. "Eh, is no problem. Is all fine."
He glanced around at the stone walls and the bits of vegetation that was growing between them, moving out of the way after he was hit with a droplet of water as to not be hit again.
"What you think this is anyway?"
