Kusanagi's scrutinizing gaze diverted from the man who called himself Martin, not because she wasn't any less suspicious of him yet, but rather, it was that Keansi had embraced her, earning a complaint from her side. Perhaps if she had prepared herself from the impact, perhaps if she took the time to hide her wound better...
Perhaps things would not have escalated the way they did now.
A wash of guilt came over her as poor Keansi broke down in front of her apologizing profusely. Of course Kusanagi didn't believe it was her fault. She didn't possess the talons that inflicted the wound. She hadn't failed to follow her instructions to hide, assuming "Martin" was of no threat. It wasn't even that she was upset with Keansi for running off. Rather, she was worried that something happened to her, despite the effort to keep her safe from the predators in the area. And now she was curled up into a ball again, sniffing out quiet, terrified sobs. A force of habit from her homeworld, where sound welcomed Death, Kusanagi knew.
After taking a moment to steadily lower herself down to one knee beside the little girl and place a hand on her shoulder and spoke in a soft and even tone. "It's alright, Keansi. What transpired is not of any fault that is your own. You did just as I asked of you and hid from harm until I came to find you. I was just somewhat careless on the way back." Pulling her hand from Keansi's shoulder and momentarily removing the one on her shoulder, she undid the scarf around her neck and proceeded to wrap it around her waist to cover the wound as she continued. "And I have suffered far worse than this long before you were born." With a tug, her scarf tied in a secure knot. A temporary bandage until she found proper medical equipment. In the meantime, she would bear a facade suggesting that she was in fact not experiencing considerable pain for Keansi's sake.
It would be easier to get the two of them to the city if they were both as calm as possible. As for Martin...
She looked his way once more, her expression guarded still, but as she looked at that ridicules posture of his, she gave him the benefit of the doubt that he was of no more a threat than he was queer. "Martin, was it? To return your introduction, you may refer to me as Kusanagi. I have been traveling with young Keansi to the City of this world. Am I to assume you are as well? Or perhaps you have business within these woods?"

Keansi seemed to calm from Kusangi's words. She sat up, still sniffling but no longer sobbing. She watched Kusangi use the scarf to better hide her wound, and apply pressure. Kusangi would be okay. The thought relieved her. She was still upset with herself. Yes, she did what Kusangi asked - and then she got distracted and did something she wasn't supposed to do! She never would have done that at home.
Home. Another wave of homesickness hit her. Feeling a little sick, she gently hugged Kusangi again - this time avoiding going anywhere near Kusangi's wound. "I miss Mama and Daddy," she said quietly, before dropping the subject. She pulled away and grabbed Kusangi's hand instead.
"Will there be things to help heal you in the city?" Keansi asked hopefully. She looked at the fox-eared girl. "Cuz then we should hurry, so that you can get better quickly." There was some expectation, wondering, curious.
As per Jarod's advice, Keansi had been ignoring the conversation between Martin and Kusangi. Though, when one or the other was talking she went quiet even if they weren't addressing her. It was rude to interrupt people, she knew, so she simply didn't.
"I think they don't like each other," Jarod commented. Keansi frowned at him and nodded, but shushed him. He shouldn't say things were other people might hear. Of course, nobody ever seemed to hear the squirrel but her, so maybe that wasn't such an issue. Still, it did bug her.
She squeezed Kusangi's hand, her tears mostly dry as she used Jarod to help wipe away the last of the wet. Be strong, be brave, she told herself. You have a friend here to help you, and you'll be O.K.

baby you're the king and i'm the q u e en o f
Uriah was having trouble dealing with his life.
Floating jellyfish? Flying anime? What the fuck! Was this world crazy? He stayed pissed until the second Kusanagi started talking. The... thing was speaking like Yoda, for Chrissake. Who even talked like that anymore? Nobody. Nobody in the world talked like that. Uriah put his face in his hands, squishing up his cheeks in exasperation. He let his arms drop, and returned to just a regular, 'alright-I-give-up' kind of pose, shoulders slumped. He did give up. Maybe twenty minutes in, and he was done. Go team. You did it.
"Okay," he replied, flatly. "Kusanagi. Right? Yeah."
He blinked at what he presumed to be a her, his expression flabbergasted. He wanted to be mad, but there was no possible way he could be. Not with how ridiculous this was. Maybe when he was alone, he'd have a little breakdown to himself. But not now. He had to deal with this for just a little bit longer, and then he could skedaddle.
He glanced down at the kid, who was too busy worshiping the anime to notice him. Alright then, whatever. Kids, though. He remembered why they could be irritating.
It took a few moments for the man to register that he was being asked a question. He was still caught up in her archaic speech patterns. Finally, he responded, "Uh... I, uh, I didn't know we had a city here, sister. I mean, yeah, I should probably go there but, like, I can do it alone sooooo..." He paused.
"So yeah. You seem to have this whole..." Uriah gestured to the entire forest. "thing handled. Could you just, like, point me in the right direction? That would be rad, chica."
Uriah offered a smile. It didn't really reach his eyes.

Kusanagi gave out a short "huff" at the man's answer. When she first got here, she thought she was interrupting something between him and Keansi, but now that she was here, he wanted to up and leave. She was beginning to suspect ill of his motives once more. "Very well then. From here, the City is..." She tilted her head upward, and an expression of concentration and calculation came upon her face.
She didn't trust any "landmarks" this land had to offer but one, the city in the worlds center. She kept a constant mental note of her location based upon approximately how far she had traveled from the cluster of buildings and in what direction, her very sense of direction like that of a compass.
A moment later she raised her free hand, fingers first pointing upward, then off to a particular direction. "In that direction. If you plan on going there, you'd best make haste, and do not rely too heavily on the landmarks here. They have a tendency to relocate themselves." she explained.
She blinked and noticed that her hand was being held in that of the little girl's as it was squeezed. Last time, that sort of interaction had felt so unnatural to the kitsune that she reacted quite negatively to it. Be it because her focus was so set on the objective of getting the girl to safety that she simply "got over" the holding of hands and deemed it acceptable towards an end, or perhaps maybe, just maybe, she became comfortable with this gesture? Perhaps even appreciated it? As things stood, Kusanagi herself was not quite sure.
"...Alright then," she said as she pushed herself back onto her feet, pulling Keansi along with her. "You needn't worry. The city shouldn't be too far by now, and there will likely be a first-aid kit available to deal with this minor inconvenience."
Whenever Keansi was ready, Kusanagi would proceed to lead the way.

i'm going to just make a little interjecting post and have Uriah skedaddle cause his bitch ass is OUTTIE baby you're the king and i'm the q u e en o f
Uriah listened wordlessly, saying jack squat.
All right. Obligation-free. He was visibly relieved when given the direction to the city, both because there was a city and because now he got to think about himself again, not some-- and now he felt he was able to think this way-- snuffling kid. Great, magnificent Satan, this whole morality thing was just getting more and more stressful as he thought about it. Uriah had no clue how he'd ever done it in the past. It was awful.
"Sí, don't trust the landmarks. Got it, pollita." He gave her a pseudo-salute, and turned on his heel, gold-flake-covered skin shimmering in the moonlight, and began walking.
His smile dropped the instant his face was not visible.
So then Uriah left, thinking: what the fuck was going on.

Keansi watched him leave, blinking. "...Martin's rude, isn't he?" she commented with a blunt, unaffected tone. It seemed she wasn't bothered much by his rudeness, though the way she clutched Jarod to her chest indicated she was upset by his leaving. Instead of reacting, she just looked up at Kusangi. She hadn't had time to get attached to the so-called 'Martin' so it wasn't a traumatic event.
"Let's go. I don't care what you say, that wound looks awful," she told her. She tugged lightly. Then furrowed her eyebrows. "Do we follow him...? Or, wait, we try flying again, right?" She looked curiously - and somewhat hopefully - at Kusangi.
The brief taste she'd gotten - before the monsters of course - was wonderful to her. She had only known the ground, thought the air belonged only to the birds and whatever the refugees were hiding from. She had no idea that the sky could ever be touched by anyone else.
So of course she was excited to try and fly again. But then she was frowning. "That's a bad idea huh, since you're hurt. You couldn't carry me." Keansi nodded firmly and began to tug at Kusangi's hand in the direction Martin went.
((wooc;; ALL THE FAIL, RIGHT HERE))

When Kusanagi was certain he was gone, she addressed Keansi again, whose skepticism pursued the kitsune's belittling of her wound. "I do believe that 'Martin' would rather travel to the city alone, to be alone with his thoughts," she explained. "Not everyone who comes here is able to immediately come to terms with it. Seeing a being like myself who doesn't belong in the world that he does likely upet him." She looked in the direction of the city, looking for a path through the brush that they could easily traverse through while she added, "Give him some time to collect himself, and we'll likely see him in the city soon enough."
Though she would rather not, if she was honest with herself. She didn't like the way he smelled.
While it was true that while it would be easier and faster to reach the city by flight, Kusanagi knew that Keansi was right, even though she was loathe to admit it herself. It would be too difficult to try to carry the girl and fly at the same time with an injury. The strain would only succeed in harming herself even more. However, it shouldn't have been too far from the urban gates from where they were now.
"We'll just walk the rest of the way then," she said. "It shouldn't be too far now. If we keep under the treeline, it will act as a barrier from those airborne beasts."
[wooc: s'okay Kuna. Do you wanna wrap up this thread soon and maybe start the next one in the city somewhere?]
