The girl was sitting down. She had gotten separated from her guardian and friend, and decided the best thing to do was wait to be found. There were sparkling lights in the distance, and the strange twilight that had lasted for several hours was beginning to bother her.
There were shadows here, and darkness, and things that the ten-year-old was not found of. She leaned her head towards the stuffed squirrel in her lap, her dark curly hair hiding her eyes as she conversed softly with the creature she had long-ago deemed 'Jarod'.
How strange that a female child projected a male persona on her favorite toy; mostly, boys projected male and girls projected female but with Keansi, this was not the case. And she allowed the squirrel to say all the things she would not. The brave things and the childish things, both.
It would be easy to startle her. She was leaning against a tree, wiggling her bare toes and in the garb of a dirty pink nightdress, surrounded by the shadows of a dying sun. Or rather, a dying atmospheric light and rising moons. She had just begun to get used to the strangeness of the dreamworld, this world she was in.
And it was still so scary and terrifying. Even with Jarod, the little girl felt very alone. She wished she didn't lose sight of Kusangi, or maybe called out when she walked too fast to keep up with. The girl sniffled, rubbing tears away from her eyes.
A blue-green light caused her to look up. A strange jellyfish-creature, floating in the air. In awe, she stood, reaching out a pale and uncertain hand.
"How pretty," she whispered aloud, a smile coming on her face.

baby you're the king and i'm the q u e en o f
Unceremonious translocation was, like, the worst thing that could happen. He'd been through some tough shit, too. These experiences included, but were not limited to: having his arm ripped off by a werewolf, having that happened again, being punched for disputing the claim that Gettysburg was a national tragedy, having his car windshield smashed twice, being beat to death by the man who had smashed his windshield, and being beat to near-death by good people who just didn't like the gays. But this? This took the cake. This took the proverbial cake, which was a proverbial German chocolate cake. Or, it had been, at one point. Now it was a crumbled, dried-out, vaguely coconutty mess soaked in the sour juices that come from panic attack-induced sweat. Probably urine too.
Now, Uriah was a businessman. Ever since a young age, he had studied to become a successful manager. After finally attaining that goal, he was left with a strong sense of order. He liked to do things or have things done a certain way. He liked things to go smoothly and as planned. His plan had been to go to sleep, wake up, go to Mexico City, get his product moving, then get out. That plan went wrong somewhere around the 'go to sleep' part. First, he'd been interrupted by Andrew, who said he had to wear these womens' pajamas. After that ordeal had blown over, he then had fallen asleep and had a very sad dream. He had seen his sister, actually smiling. Happy. For once. He had approached her, and he'd forgotten that she was dead. They talked for what seemed like forever, and when she asked him to come see something, he'd followed her gladly. He hadn't realized just how bad he'd fucked up this time.
The dream ended suddenly, and he was flat on his back on a tree branch.
Uriah had flailed so much that he'd just fallen out of the tree and broken his nose. He had taken some time to have an initial fit (WHAT THE HELL ANDREW, WHAT'S HAPPENING, GET ME OUT OF HERE RIGHT NOW etc), but once he realized that nobody was going to answer him, he put on his big boy boots and got over himself. He was trying to find-- well, anything. Any sign of civilization, actually. As he walked, he thought more and more about his situation. He didn't usually feel fear any more, but now, as he was suddenly alone and in an unfamiliar place? He was frightened. There could, naturally, be any number of explanations to this. The most likely, he figured, was that he had died, and this was actually Hell. At the same time, he thought that this couldn't be Hell. Hell was full of shitty people, and unless 'shitty people' meant 'trees' and he'd missed something, then it definitely wasn't hell. He was fucking perplexed, and upset, and visibly distressed.
Then he smelled... breathing.
He inhaled the carbon dioxide, and unconsciously walked towards it. Then he realized what he was smelling and consciously walked towards it. Cautiously, of course. He may have been walking into... something. He didn't know what yet. Anything fucking went, in this ridiculous world of... eternal dusk or something. Uriah tried to quell his anger. He didn't want that to screw up his decision-making process, anyway. He had to make calm, rational choices here. Then he saw the girl sitting on the ground. Uriah stopped dead in his tracks, and squinted. What. He thought it might have been some kind of spirit, but as far as he knew, forest denizens of any sort didn't wear pink dresses or hold stuffed squirrels but hey, what did he know. He stepped closer, poking his head out from behind a tree. A little girl, reaching out to touch a jellyfish. Uriah's heart hurt suddenly.
"Hey," he called. "Hey there? Uh-- kid?"
Uriah stepped out from behind the tree. He paused.

"Jarod speaking" - only Keansi can hear "Keansi speaking" She yanked her hand away from the jellyfish, stepping away from the stranger nervously. He had come out of nowhere in Keansi's eyes, and that instantly made her nervous. She was waiting for Kusangi, and this man wearing... what was he wearing? Keansi could make no comparison of it. The girl's nose screwed up and she took another step away, shifting from foot to foot. She didn't like him, and she couldn't put her finger on way. Maybe it was his pink attire, or the fact he came from 'nowhere', or - maybe nothing at all, but she didn't trust him. It was most likely founded on nothing - or him coming from nowhere - but nonetheless... She decided, however (with a little prompting from Jarod, who was unbothered by the stranger) to answer his question. " I'm fine." There was a pause. " I just got separated from my friend." " Don't worry. I'm sure he won't hurt us," Jarod soothed. Keansi frowned at the squirrel, holding him up. " You weren't so sure with anyone else," she pointed out, somewhat crossly. She made a face. She didn't like it when Jarod suddenly started having a different mind on things. Couldn't the squirrel make up his mind? No, no, of course not. And now, when he didn't trust Kusangi or the changeling, he decided to trust this stranger. Who looked decidedly human, she would admit, but Kusangi and the changeling looked very human, too. Minus the tail or the grayscale neutrality, albeit, but still. She looked back at the stranger, her eyes narrowed as she went back to cuddling and clinging to her squirrel. " Who are you?" she asked decisively. Might as well ask her own questions.

baby you're the king and i'm the q u e en o f
Uriah was frowning intensely at the child.
She was alone in a dark forest, with only a stuffed squirrel to her name. The more he looked at it, the less it seemed like anything suspicious. He couldn't taste any ozone or sulfur on the air, which suggested that maybe it really wasn't some kind of monster after all. He approached slowly while listening, and about twenty feet away, he crouched down. He didn't say anything, but just looked over, concerned and interested. Maybe it was... maybe it was just a little girl. She smelled alive, and for the most part, she looked human. Uriah chewed on the inside of his cheek. What was he doing? He was afraid of a little kid. Jesus, Uriah, he thought. As a vampire and, you know, an extremely powerful leader of an international drug/human trafficking ring, he figured he shouldn't be afraid of anything.
"Oh, that's, uh, that's good. You know where she-- he paused, and without skipping a beat, said, "Martin. I'm Martin. Who are you, kid?"
Speaking, he had a Hispanic accent, even though he was white, blond-haired, and Aryan as can be. It was really, really strange to hear coming out of his mouth, and probably the strangest thing about it was that it wasn't fake. Uriah had been speaking Spanish for so long that now, when he spoke English, the accent just kind of happened. Maybe, at some point, it had been an affectation. Now, though, he couldn't change it no matter how hard he tried. He was fully aware of how ridiculous it sounded, too, and remained in a constant state of agitation when dealing with his dealers and distributors, who liked to make fun of the gringo with the 'fake' accent. Uriah thought about it for a second, and his face twitched.
"You have any idea where your, uh, friend went, kid? At all?" He reached up to put a hand on the back of his neck.
He didn't know who this friend was going to be. He kind of wanted to get out of there while he could, specifically since he didn't know where the Hell he was or what else was here. But this kid was just that. A kid. He thought back to when he was fourteen, and cringed to think what would have happened it he hadn't been there. Uriah decided then to stick around. He cracked a smile. His teeth were perfect and white, if Chiclet-like in construction. His canines, stereotypically, were exaggerated. It seemed genuine, and he looked alright.
"Cause, uh, if you're scared, I can stay around." He shrugged.

His intense frown was matched by Keansi's own. His name was Martin, apparently. She clutched Jarod close to her. Okay, he was scary. Maybe not so human after all. Maybe he really was a monster. His smile revealed sharp teeth (or at least his canines were sharp) and he was weird. But she quickly decided to answer his question.
Did she know where Kusangi had gone? Sort of. "She fought some monsters," she said, explaining, "And I got distracted by pretty lights. I think they're all jellyfish." It was honest. She furrowed her eyebrows, crinkling her nose again. She wasn't sure of this person, and she didn't like it. At all. Even Jarod had gone quiet, apparently finally put off by his weirdness too.
He stayed a good distance away, which was a good thing, but still. There was no way she could trust him. Or was there? Her thoughts fell back on Kusangi, with the strange-sword tail, and the changeling, who seemed so terrifying. And Kusangi had said something about this world being a dream.
Keansi crouched down like he did, but that made her legs hurt. So she was sitting down again, watching him uncertainly.
"I'm a little scared," she admitted, "But I don't know if I can trust you." She was blunt - she was never one to play around with words. Well, perhaps in finding and using words - but still. She tilted her head, wondering if she could impress him with her vocabulary.
"You're a stranger, maybe a monster. You're scary too," she informed him, mind still whirring to find a good word she could use against him.
As much as Jarod, her wordplay was a comfort to her. While she never minced meanings - that was alliteration! - she could find satisfactory synonyms, and that helped her feel a bit braver, a bit better.
Would Kusangi find her? She pushed the doubt away, because she had to have faith. And anyway, Jarod was confident that Kusangi would come and protect them.
So if he was a monster, Kusangi would come and rescue them in time, just like in the books she read.

"You know, I don't know if I'm a monster either," he tried, cautiously. "Let me check--"
He stood and looked down at himself. He raised a chicken leg, shook it, and bent his back forward. Uriah tried looking down at his back, then gave up and examined his arms. He scrutinized his hands, too, spreading the fingers and checking for claws. Then he looked back up at Keansi, perplexed. He shrugged.
"No, it looks like I'm not. I mean, last time I checked, I'm pretty human. But I guess I am pretty strange. I mean..." He gestured down at himself. "I'm wearing girls' pajamas. It's not my fault, but hey, it still happened. And they're not even flattering, you know? They make my legs look really skinny. Do you think my legs are skinny?" He bent his leg and held it up, wiggling his bear* toes.
Then Uriah looked back up at her to gauge her reaction. He'd forgotten how to act around kids since his sister had stopped having them. He could either be a hit or seen as a fucking creep. He couldn't even begin to tell which. Despite being a business tycoon, dealing with people every single day, he still had a hard time understanding how others were going to react. Well, he didn't have a hard time. He just didn't give a shit, or even a poot. His negligence in that department had resulted in withered empathy. Oh well. That was the price of being rich and beautiful. *bear= You know. You know.

She stared, blankly, for a moment. This was not what she had expected.
But Keansi couldn't help it - soon she was giggling at "Martin's" antics, finding them so very funny. The giggles kept on as he stretched and contorted himself into all sorts of shapes and positions. And she was grinning. She didn't distrust him as much now.
Yes, he was strange. But despite being strange he seemed funny and not-mean. And well, he said it himself - he wasn't a monster. He had even checked, right in front of her. She made a little laughing-squeal noise. Looks like Kusangi didn't need to rescue her. Though it would be nice of her new friend would come along...
"Those don't look like any pajamas I've ever seen," Keansi pointed out of his attire, "I mean, lookit my jammies." She gestured at herself, Jarod being held in one hand now. "I guess they could be guy jammies, but then they're pink and Daddy always wore long pants and a T-shirt, not... underwear-looking pants and a tiny little shirt like that." She grinned at him.
It was then she decided to answer his question. She furrowed her eyebrows and narrowed her eyes, staring at his leg with an expression of intense concentration and mild contemplation. Finally, she answered.
"Your legs are very skinny." She agreed with that assessment. So he was a skinny-legged not-monster. A human, in other terms. She giggled. Yes, he was a bit strangely proportioned, wasn't he? Perhaps it was the fickle nature of the world she had the unfortunate coincidence to be in.
Of course, he still looked very human. Except for the long teeth, but everyone had their oddities. Speaking of which... Keansi got that look of intense concentration again, poking her tongue around her mouth to feel all of her teeth. They felt normal to her, nothing long or sharp like Martin's canines. Yup, that was definitely something strange.
Oh well. Kusangi had a tail and ears, didn't she? Maybe Keansi was the only person who looked all-human in the world.
The thought, instead of amusing her, made her feel a bit sad.

He laughed. "Me and my chicken legs and girls' pajamas, huh? I guess they are weird pajamas. But they're special, 'cause my boyfriend bought them for me. And he thinks it's funny when I wear funny clothes."
Uriah shrugged, and came to stand near Keansi. He looked her over, and wondered how long she'd been here. Had she been here long enough to get that dirty? That concerned him. And that concern alarmed him. He hadn't felt concerned about someone he didn't know in a long, long time. For a man who sold humans to get money, it wasn't an emotion that came easily. But this was a kid. In strange woods with floating jellyfish and similar bullshit, and if that was him, he'd probably want somebody to stay with him. So, until they found her, uh... her new friend, he'd stick around.
He sat down next to her. "So, what's your name? And your friend's name? Cause I told you mine already, and I don't wanna have to call you chica! That's no fun, huh?"
He... liked kids. He forgot that he liked kids.
Uriah felt disgusted with himself. He was above this 'feelings' bullshit.

Keansi blinked upon realizing she hadn't shared her name. That was rude!
"Oh!" she exclaimed, "My name's Keansi. This is Jarod -" she held up her squirrel "- and my friend is named Kusangi." She wrinkled her nose. "That's not exactly it, but I can't pronounce it very well." She shrugged. She tilted her head at him. Her expression was inquisitive, without the studious distrust of earlier. No, this was just a want to understand. He was wearing silly clothes and was he - sparkling? a bit. It intrigued her. In the world she had been raised in, frivolous things couldn't be afforded. Beyond a child's ability to play, of course, and occasionally books and conversations and - and things that allowed people to quickly hide back in shelter, to run away, that didn't cost much.
"Where do you come from?" she asked, deciding it was a decent question. A question that should be asked. "I don't know the name of where I come from, but the people I know are hiding - we're refugees from something. I don't exactly know what. I've only heard the effects of it, not what it is." She shrugged. "Kusangi says she comes from a place called Earth. She's a - she's a-" The girl's face screwed up. "A Yokai, that's it! She says she's a Yokai." Her voice was somewhat triumphant at remembering - and pronouncing it properly. Then she frowned.
"Oh, did you just wake up? I woke up earlier today, when it was dawn. But really it was dawn, and then it was day and then dusk, just like that..." Keansi trailed off, going quiet.
This world made no sense.

"Keansi," he repeated quietly. "Jarod. Good names."
He listened to her, nodding when appropriate. He seemed genuinely interested in what she had to say. Partially, it was because he remembered that kids liked that. It was also because she might know something about where they were, because he sure as Hell didn't. So far, though, what she was saying didn't reveal anything about this place. Just some irrelevant world where the child had grown up-- well, grown up so far. His external expression didn't change when she asked where he was from, but internally, he had to think about it. Okay, he was going by Martin. He doubted she would take issue with continuity errors, but he just couldn't handle being inconsistent. So after she was done speaking and he was done cataloging the information about Kusangi the Yokai, he said,
"I'm from a place in the States. Albuquerque, New Mexico. It's way down south-- kinda hot, and sunny, and real dry, you know?" He pretended to think for a moment, then continued, "Yeah, I did just wake up. About an hour ago, I think? I dunno, cause it's dark. Hard to tell time when she sun's not out."
This time, Uriah actually paused to think a moment. "So, Keansi-- I'm saying that right, right?-- you know where we are? 'Cause I'm a little lost!"

The fact that Martin was listening so politely was reciprocated in that she listened in turn. It seemed she was a bit confused by his details, but decided that it was normal to talk about an area you were familiar with in such a way. After all, wouldn't you expect everyone to know exactly what you were talking about?
His pauses bothered her a bit, but she shrugged it off. She shrugged at his estimate of time. She had no idea. Without the sun, without schedule, she had no idea about any time. All she could guess was it was longer or shorter, and go on how tired she was. Which, other than aching feet from too much walking, was hardly tired at all. But, on reflection, she was very hungry.
"All I know is we're in a forest and far away from home," she said honestly. She glanced at her squirrel toy, sighing. Far away from home, with only a memory of it and one familiar hand to cling to. She hugged Jarod, sniffling as she felt a sudden wave of homesickness sweep over her. It wasn't fair. It wasn't something that was okay or even remotely 'fine'. It was just... awful. She swallowed, trying to keep the tears back.
"Do you know what transient means?" she asked suddenly, "It means something that's temporary. It's a pretty word, sort of poetic maybe. But sometimes it feels like everything is transient. And that's... that's a bad feeling to have." She looked up at him, an expression of hope on her face. That maybe he'd understand. Perhaps she had lived her whole life in transition, waiting for everything to fade.
Finally, her philosophy trailed back into the question. "I don't really know where we are. I'm lost, too." She was sort of sick of being lost.

Kids sometimes, though. Uriah rolled his shoulders, then sat forward, reaching down to play with the grass.
He nodded. Kids, and their blatantly obvious observations. It wouldn't have really bother him, but with his tolerance for bullshit obliterated after decades of not having to deal with it, children kind of irritated him. He swallowed it, though, when she swallowed. He'd seen a small girl cry enough times to know that the sniffling was the start of it. Next it would be whimpering, and then just ABLOOBLOOBLOO crying. Suddenly uncomfortable, Uriah raised his hand and patted her on the head. Maybe that would stop it. How do children? He nodded again to her question, even though she answered it a second later anyway.
He frowned.
"I can see how that would be a feeling, chica. But, you know, even if some things are, uh, transient, like you said, other things are permanent. You know, like, if you love a favorite toy?" He gestured to Jarrod. "Like, you'll have the love for that toy-- what is it, like a squirrel or somethin'?-- forever, even after he's gone. And you know, that's what's important, kid."
Uriah paused. Then he smiled. "That's okay. We can be lost together. Whatchu say? Maybe we can go and try to find, uh, maybe a landmark? Or something? Civilization, in any form?"
He seemed briefly uncertain, but then he stood up and shook himself. He brushed the grass and dirt from his backside. Uriah offered his hand to the girl.

The wind blew wildly above a break in the trees some distance away, and a vulpine girl clad in grey and white dropped down to the grass and landed upon her feet with grace. "...tsk, you're all a waste of my time." As she started walking toward the treeline, a flock of Shriekers, seemingly torn, hacked, and mangled, dropped down from the sky and crashed in a mess all around the fox girl, as if they were slain by a sort of blade in midair.
Reaching the treeline however, the kitsune girl winced and held her side. She brought her hand to her face to find blood coating her fingertips. "Damn." Her torso appeared to have been struck, by a talon from one of the creatures no doubt.
No matter, she thought. I need to find Keansi. A scratch like this is...
She winced again, and her steps staggered. Nothing. Kicking off the grass, a gus of wind picked up around her and propelled her through the trees as she followed a familiar sent.
~~~
The scent grew closer with every passing moment, but was farther away than the kitsune anticipated. Had something happened? What was she doing so far away? She was just supposed to hide!
Another surge of pain ravaged her side and the fox girl nearly veered off course into a tree as a result. Almost there! she thought. That was when she picked up another scent. Something not quite human, perhaps barely so. Another creature?!
~~~
A strong breeze blew through the area Keansi and Uriah were as the vulpine girl flew from the treeline like a monochrome gale and skidded to a stop in the grass with one hand and her two feet (the other hand was still holding her side.) "Keansi!" she exclaimed as she looked toward the human girl. "Are you alright? What are you doing all the way out here?" She turned her gaze to the man with her and narrowed her slitted steel colored eyes. "Your scent," she muttered. It was the other one she detected on her way here. "Who are you?" she demanded.

Keansi nodded, blinking as she thought about what Uriah said. He had patted her on the head too, something her dad did a lot, and she had to scrub at her eyes to not cry. She was definitely sniffling though. She looked at Jarod. Yeah, she'd never forget Jarod. And probably never be separated from him, either. She hugged the doll tightly.
"Well, I don't want to go too much farther from-" She didn't have a chance to finish her sentence, because there was Kusangi. She brightened. "Kusangi!" she cried out, rushing over to her friend to hug her. But then she paused, pulling away. Some blood was on her arm, but she hadn't hugged hard or close enough to get it anywhere else.
"You're hurt!" Keansi touched the hand protecting her side, clearly worried. Now the tears welled up in her eyes. No, oh no.
"I'm sorry I ran off," she blubbered, "There were pretty lights and I forgot and I'm sorry you're hurt it's all my fault." After that long run-on sentence, the tears were not just tears but full-on wailing. She couldn't help it. She felt such a wave of worry and anger at herself and frustration and confusion that - boom! Suddenly it was coming out in a rush. She felt all the stress of the day (was it even a day?) just boil up at run over.
The girl sat down with a loud thud, plopping into the grass as she just gave up and cried. The wailing part was over quickly, but not the sobbing. No, the sobs shook the whole girl's body, forced into small whimpering huffs of air noise-wise due to the way she had lived. When she had sobbed early on, it had always been out of fear - and noise could mean death.
So a quick, loud wail, and then shuddering sobs. She was shaking all over, rubbing at her snotty nose, clinging to her squirrel toy. She was, essentially, a mess. The picture of a child's misery. She curled up, hands against her head, side on the grass, as she sobbed.
It was all her fault... The phrase, the blame, wouldn't get out of her head.

Uriah nodded at her response, giving a sigh. He leaned back against the tree, bending a leg up against the trunk.
His first instinct was to bolt. This kid was going to slow him down if he were to stay with her. He raised his leg from the trunk, ready to sneak away, but paused. He thought about it. If there were nastier things out in these woods than him (and if Satan had it his way, there certainly would be), then leaving the girl alone would be a death sentence. Usually, it wouldn't have bothered him-- leaving someone to die. But it wasn't something he could do to a kid. He wouldn't be able to help to any extent if something big and ugly came at them, but he'd be blessed if he didn't try. Uriah cried on the inside. He hadn't needed to think so ethically in a long time. Morals were a tiring shackle. But then again, them's the breaks, he figured. Uriah let his head roll back, resting against the tree. A nice breeze blew through, and he ran his hand through his hair. He wished he had a cigarette.
Then an anime flew down out of the sky.
Uriah blinked. He didn't say a word. He just watched as the monochrome vixen flew out of the air like some strange, black and white low-budget anime character. He just stared. He couldn't not stare. There was absolutely no way that he couldn't. Not any way on Earth or in Hell or in Heaven was there a way not to look at the thing in front of him. And Uriah had seen some shit. Some really strange, fucked up shit. He stood there, blinking, lips pressed into a tight line. He looked incredibly disapproving. Or confused. Or constipated. Or all three. He opened his mouth to say something, then didn't. There was nothing to say.
Then it asked who he was.
It insulted his scent first, then demanded to know his identity. How dare it. First off. How dare it. He was wearing Tamiya TML, which was tropical fruit-scented. And it had gold flakes in it. Fucking 145$ a bottle. How insulting. And second, it demanded his identity, and that pissed him off, too. His identity was his own, and certainly not the business of this two-bit, fox-eared, Sonic the Hedgehog-haired anime character or whatever the fuck it was. The thing that was now the center of the girl's attention. Uriah's face was disgusted and offended.
"Um? I'm Martin? Who the-- who are you, tho?"
He held his right hand up to his chest in a loose fist, disgusted. He went down on one hip, leg bent, in a sassy pose.
