Zuzanna only saw darkness while sleeping. She always had vivid dreams, even though sometimes they weren't very nice. But when she saw nothing more than pitch black space around her in her sleep, she felt something was wrong. She had no idea what exactly.
Everything was wrong in her world; why couldn't she moved out of her dimension and live in a new one? That was her secret dream - close her eyes and be far away from cities full of aggressive half-humans, half-animals.
However, she knew that was impossible. When she opened her eyes, she realized she was lying on the ground. Where was her rocking chair and boring set of books? Nothing could give her the answer.
Her first thought was that someone had brought her here. Maybe humans started a war with those creatures again and she was safe in their shelter? So maybe someone above finally heard her prayers and she was in a better world. The only thing she knew was that she was alone. She also saw tracks coming and fading away in the darkness. Maybe if humans in her world had been allowed to travel by underground trains, she'd know where she was.
But for now, there was only darkness and loneliness - two things she was the most afraid of. She felt nervous pressure in her stomach, her head started to swim. Was there anybody who could take her away from this creepy place? |

Tryst had been walking for what felt like forever, but she didn’t mind. It was a slow, meandering walk along the strangest street she’d ever seen in an unusually stretching town without any light. There were no signs of life but every now and again she thought she heard something screeching in the distance.
She began humming to herself - a slow, old song that she could never remember where she’d first heard it - and morphed. The sound wasn’t the same coming from the throat of a bear but she kept on, pausing only to pick her clothes up in her mouth so she wouldn’t have to backtrack later to find them.
There was a split in the tracks up ahead, one continuing straight and one curving sharply to the left. She took the left. Her massive paws swung out as she exaggerated each step, her body rocking from side to side and her head swaying rhythmically. She’d found, over the past few days, that when she wanted to sleep the lilting motion was the easiest way to bring on a yawn. She’d found also that it was safest for her to sleep in her animal form, as some of the dangers of this strange world were less inclined to bother her and she could easily flee or inflict damage.
She almost walked past the girl in the darkness. She stopped, sat on her haunches and then laid down, resting her head on her front paws, her clothes beside her. This was the first human she’d seen, and she wasn’t sure if the girl would be friendly. Tryst waited patiently, yellow eyes shining.

Zuzanna was still sitting on the floor. How long has she been there? Why nobody came? She had no idea. She started to fantasize that she’s somewhere far away. With people who love her with pure, true, infinity love. Love not in physical way. No kisses, hugs or touch. Only the acceptation and understanding. She knew that it is not easy to find such relationship. She knew, because she had tried to find love everywhere before.
She woke up from this fantasies, when she heard someone’s steps. Rescue? She looked at source of the sounds. It was a polar bear. Great. She remembered people with torsos of bears. They were looking pretty funny, when they were walking on think, human legs… But they were usually not very polite and quite aggressive. Was the bear in the subway also like that? In her world she had met some nice quasi-bears.
“Hello, little bear” she said. She didn’t want to scare the animal with her presence, so she let the bear know that she was there with her voice. At least ‘her’ from other dimension had been doing this always, when she was walking up to the horse. Zuzanna didn’t know was she doing right. Shouldn’t she just run away? What will she do if the bear will get angry and will try to kill her?

She raised her head from her paws at the quiet words. Hello was friendly enough for her, though she still wasn’t certain she should morph back into her human self and so she stayed a great white bear.
She took her clothes back in her mouth and stood, then made her way closer to the girl. She gave a little nod of her head, dropped her bundle of clothes and boots, and laid down. Her body wrapped around the girl in a protective manner. She let out a sigh and stared at the girl for a moment. Perhaps she had moved too fast? She wasn’t trying to scare her, only keep her warm as the tunnels were slightly chilly and give her some form of comfort. She looked about ready to cry, and Tryst didn’t like it when others cried.
She wished, not for the first time in her life, that she had her Rider’s telepathic ability and could speak with others while being an animal. It would make life so much easier. On Modrros, of course, she’d had no need since she never went anywhere without the boy. No matter. She would stay with the girl and watch over her, at least until she wasn’t wanted.

The last thing Zuzanna expected was touch from the bear. She wasn’t very scared, though. She knew that she should have been calm and quiet. In that moment the girl noticed clothes, the bear was holding. First she thought the bear had killed someone, but there was no blood and these things were clean and not torn. Even though, she believed the bear didn’t want to wound her, she twitched, when she felt the touch of soft fur and warm body.
She smiled to the bear. She felt like her confidence was coming back.
“Where we are, my dear?” she asked not suspecting to get the answer.
All the situation seemed very weird. Zuzanna only hoped, she will find the answer for her question one time. But now she was enjoying the bear’s company and warm it was giving to her.

Tryst fell asleep quickly, her snores filling the empty subway tunnels with a low grumble. But she didn't sleep long. She hadn't been able to get any good sleep in since coming to this strange world.
She sat up. Her nose itched and she pawed at it and sneezed. Then she picked her clothes up and walked away, leaving Zuzanna alone in the dark tunnel. She morphed, shivering as her fur disappeared and left her skin bare to the frigid air. She stepped into her overalls, pulled her boots onto her feet and tightened the straps, and shoved her beanie onto her head. She brushed her bangs into place with her fingers. She glanced over her shoulder at the other girl.
She walked back, her arms crossed over her small chest. "Hi," she said loudly and not very cheerfully. Her chin was turned up slightly so she stared down at Zuzanna. Then she sat, crossed her legs, slumped her shoulders and smiled. "I'm Tryst. What's your name?"

Rhythm of bear’s breathing made Zuzanna fall asleep. She gave up trying to explain where she is and why she’s there. She knew that she won’t find an answer without talking with someone who had more knowledge or was longer here. And it didn’t seem like the bear could tell her its story.
She had no dreams and was fast asleep, when her animal friend went away. She heard steps. Steps again? She felt like it was some kind of déjà vu. Well, she had experienced much more wired things in her life, so when the girl introduced herself, she said: “I’m Zuzanna. Nice to meet you.”
She didn’t say anything about the bear. She used to see things which other people couldn’t notice and was afraid of being called insane.
Zuza looked at her. In her gaze there was nothing provocative. Her lips were curved in a little, friendly smile and they didn’t seem like their owner wanted to say something. Her eyes were moving from Tryst’s head down to her feet and back again to the top of beanie. Maybe it was a little bit strange, but the girl was always looking at people she was meeting in that way - very carefully mostly because she was never sure are they real or do they come from her dimension, so she wanted to remember every single difference between humans form ‘her’ Earth and them.
She spent a while just looking and unnoticeable smiling. Then she finally said: “Do you know where we are?”
It wasn’t very creative question. But she just wanted to keep the ball rolling.

Her lips turned out in a pout as she glanced around, brushing through her bangs again. She pulled all her hair over one shoulder then swept it back, pulled it over the other shoulder and swept it back again. She tugged her beanie further over her ears, the bright red tag above her left eye causing a momentary distraction as she toyed with it.
Then she seemed to snap back to the present situation. She looked at Zuzanna, and her eyes flashed with frustration. "I have absolutely no idea."
"You haven't seen anyone else have you? I'm looking for someone. He's about this much taller than me -" she held her hands in front of her face and made a measurement "- with gold hair that's curly and almost always in his face, and he has silver eyes. His name is Daarsen, Daarsen Leerim'n. He's my Rider. I have to find him. Have you seen him?"

Even though Zuzanna didn’t get the answer for her question, she was quite satisfied when she heard Try’s words. It was good news to her to know that she wasn’t the only one person who had no idea about the place where they’d ended.
“Okay, then. I’ll find it out one time…” She wasn’t sure did she think it or rather say… But even if her words were told out loud, it was quiet whispering.
It was her turn for answering questions. When she heard the word ‘rider’ she twitched. All things she was taught in her childhood came to her mind with huge wave of anxiety. It was forbidden word. She wasn’t allowed to think about man riding on the animal. But wait… Tryst ‘tahn wasn’t an animal and there was nobody who could blow the whistle on her. Of course the girl could be a ‘spy’ but Zuzanna decided to risk and to trust a little bit.
“I’m very sorry, but I haven’t seen him… “ She really wanted to help, but didn’t have an idea how could she do that. “Do you remember maybe when have you seen him last time?”
Well, Try probably have already thought about it. But always when someone other hears your story, your two ways of thinking connected together may give any clue.
