Your characters awake in small, dark cells. At the front of the cell there appears to be a grate that allows them to look out onto the sandy arena. At the center of the arena three weapon racks stand with various weapons.
Above the arena, floating in the sky, is Kukulcan himself. He appears as a serpent so massive, his many thick coils are actually blocking out the cloudy, evening sky. These coils are constantly rolling over each other, almost like he is swimming. There are no visible wings on the snake, but the lack of wings obviously isn’t keeping him from flying. Around his head and down his spine is a cascade of colorful plumes and vibrant feathers, colored red, blue, green, and yellow. The rest of his shiny scales are a glistening emerald green.
“Fight and live,” said the towering feathered serpent to the combatants. “Or don’t, and die anyway.”
The gate at the front of the cell slides upwards, allowing the combatants into the arena.

Max gave up on guessing where he'd end up in this place, but he couldn't remember where he was before. All he knew is this time it was dark and cramped. He slowly got up and moved to the grate, eyes widening when he saw the sky serpent. He barely caught what it said before the grate opened and Max, who had been leaning on it, stumbled into the sandy arena.
He'd had dreams sort of similar to this before. Sort of. Completely suppressing the one's natural instinct to defend themselves along with a sadistic second being occupying the same mental space as you made for many, many violent dreams. Max wasn't even sure you could dream here, (it had been on of the few things he appreciated about this new place), and he was too aware of his mental state for it to have been a dream. This time he had control, and he wasn't going to fight anyone. He refused to even acknowledge the weapons rack, and stepped back into the cell.

Lukas jumped awake in a dark room. He was sitting against a stone wall, a few last rays of checkered daylight leaking into the room. Instinctively, he snapped his fingers before himself. At any other time in his life, sparks and then flames would have jumped from his hands but not now. Now there was nothing, not a spark, not a flicker of fire. Lukas stared, but dismissed it. Standing, he walked forward to lean against the heavy grate, peering out into the sandy pit. He eyed the torches for a moment.
This was definitely not the apartment that he had fallen asleep in.
The booming voice that filled the cell made him jump. Lukas scrambled back, watching the grate rise toward the ceiling. Fight or die. It wasn't really hard to figure out what exactly was happening here. As he stepped forward to peek out He desperately tried snapping his fingers again. He needed to be able to fight if he wasn't going to get slaughtered in a giant arena. Still nothing though. No fire. He was without use of the Science here, for whatever reason.
Nothing had come in here to kill him yet. Lukas stepped out of the cell, looking around and--caught sight of the giant undulating serpent above his head. Yelling, he stumbled back so quickly he tripped and fell into the sand. The serpent didn't respond. It continued watching and swimming in the air. Lukas stood slowly, glancing toward the far side of the Arena.
His mind was whirring, trying desperately to come up with an explanation for this whole situation. He was in another dimension. This was a demon. A very large, old, elder demon. It wanted to kill him. It wanted him to fight for his entertainment. There could be all manner of other demons on the other side of the Arena waiting for him, and without the Science he was as good as dead. Scrambling to his feet he turned look for a way out, a spot to hide, and in doing so saw the weapon rack. Dashing toward it, he yanked the great sword away, holding it up as he crept slowly across the Arena.
He saw the face peek out, look around, and then disappear. Lukas approached slowly, working to carefully control his breathing.

This was stupid. This was so stupid. Max was so done with life. Or, whatever this is. Death didn't really seem to matter anymore. Whatever. This was dumb. Why'd he have to be here. Why'd this stupid sky snake drag him into this stupid dream. This sucked.
The goop was excited, though. It was having a good time in this new world, for the most part. Fighting was its Favorite Thing. It could just kiss the giant sky snake who put them here. It was sure that they would get along if they met.
After a moment of feeling sorry for himself, Max pulled it together. He didn't know who was on the other side of the Arena. Hell, if he was dragged in here, who's to say his "opponent" was any more skilled or willing to fight as he was. Sitting here wasn't going to accomplish anything and if he was going to die anyway, it might as well be on his own terms.
"I'm not going to fight you." He called out into the arena before stepping out. He hoped his opponent understood language. He hoped it was a person. Spotting the giant Swede immediately, Maxwell's heart rate increased (ohh la la). This looked like someone who was very capable and at least moderately willing to kill him. Max wanted to make his stance clear. "I don't believe in violence. I'm not going to fight back." This could either work to his advantage or just make him look like an easy target (which he was). Either way, Max was going to appeal to him in every way he knew how. "I'm just some fifteen year old kid that grew up in a boring suburb, I don't know how to fight anyway. I haven't even finished school yet."

They stepped out to face him. Lukas' grip on the sword tightened and he gritted his teeth, prepared to swing. They told him they weren't going to fight. They told him they didn't believe in violence. They told him they were a fifteen year old boy who hadn't finished school yet. They could be lying. Demons were tricky and good at disguising themselves as things they weren't. It didn't matter. He couldn't live with himself knowing he had killed a child. He'd wasn't going to take the risk of them not being a demon. What was he thinking, anyway? He wasn't a front line sort of person. He was back up. He was support. He'd never been good at charging in himself.
Lukas' grasp on the sword loosened. The weapon clattered to the sandy ground. The Swede looked down at it and then up at the boy. He grinned, shrugging his shoulders. "Good for you," he said, winking, and then turned to look up at the massive snake creature. "I refuse to kill him."
The snake's tongue flickered.
Without warning, Lukas' huge Swede body lifted up off of the ground, and flew to slam against one of the stone walls of the arena. Something crunched. Lukas hung there, obviously struggling fruitlessly against whatever invisible force had him. The man spun away from this wall to the opposite side of the arena, bashing into the brickwork there instead. Blood splattered from a now very broken nose. He wasn't there long. Again, he flung against a different wall.
This continued, his body flying back and forth across the arena. As he flew, he became more and more of a bloody pulp. It was like some kind of sick, twisted tennis match. Things crunched, shattered bones piercing out of his skin. It was hard to tell exactly where he was hurt and how, but it didn't matter. More injuries were quickly accumulating. Blood splattered the sand as he flew from one wall to the other. Lukas started yelling.
The whole time the snake coiled in the air excitedly.

No. No. Though Max had become a pacifist for admittedly selfish reasons, and was pretty used to violence being used against him, it was very different to watch someone else get beaten to death. He felt his stomach twist as he watched. Everything in him wanted to turn away, but he was frozen there, his eyes fixed open. The movement of the enormous serpent above him barely registered as his focus moved from wall to wall with the bloody body who may or may not ha- No, he was still alive. He was screaming.
Tears pushed their way out of Max's unblinking eyes and eventually he bent over and fell to his knees. The uncomfortable pre-vomit left false promises as Max finally shut his eyes tight. This wasn't right. Max had refused first. He'd refuse to fight first. It should be him. Max knew literally nothing about this man, and still his heart ached. He wanted to beg the sky serpent to stop, but words weren't going to come to him anytime soon.
