She awoke with a start, huffed bubbles into the water she was in. It wasn't salty. At all. It was freshwater. She made a face, pulling herself up. And as soon as she was kneeling her head was above water. A freshwater pool? She looked around. She didn't recognize... anything. The water spread too far. The plants were unfamiliar to her. Panic set in.
I am an adult, she reminded herself fiercely. Well, no, she was still three tideshifts away from that, but she was old enough to not completely fail at this. Freshwater was not so bad. It was warmer than saltwater, but she adjusted easily to that. She quietly looked herself over. All in one piece, though without a weapon to her name. How frustrating.
She gritted her teeth, glanced at a tree. She'd seen birds up there, usually. There was a bird now. A strange bird. She flexed her fingers. Standing up, she sucked in air through her nose until her gills stopped fighting to find the oxygen located in water. Pure O2 flooded her lungs. She stepped cautiously on the land and sized up the tree, eyes narrowed. Finally, she griped a branch and tried to pull herself up. She climbed, not knowing what she was doing, but making it up the tree. The bird had flown off by that time, but she could see around.
In one direction was the sea. The island was too big. She shimmied back down, nervous now. She didn't know what to do.
Perhaps find something to defend herself with, first. This was far from home, maybe an island nobody had ever seen before. Either way it was an island - and that meant she'd find people in the ocean.
First step: find a weapon.
Second step: begin scoping out what species there are.
She stepped back in the water, wading through as she eyed branches on the ground. A couple of people had made spears that way, with sharp branches, and she figured she could too. It was only a manner of making sure they were strong enough.
And - she glanced up, looked around - making sure she didn't let her guard down.
