It was about the third or fourth time that Gus had to stop and take a breather. Here was as good a place as any- top of a hill, and a nice flat-ish rock to plant down on. Standing up still made him dizzy, although it was getting better. His throat was burning, and he kept absently checking for a pulse he had yet to find.
At first he'd thought Bart had left him to die of exposure. It wasn't like his brother to leave things to chance, but then again it wasn't like his brother to commit homicide, either. Gus didn't remember how he got here, but he definitely remembered dying. He doubted he was going to forget any time soon, either. He was still throbbing.
He'd been wandering aimlessly around for a couple of hours now, and hadn't seen much of anything besides hills and grass and rocks and good lord this is not how he imagined he'd be spending his afterlife. He'd expected company, at least. Small miracles though, he was mostly certain that this wasn't Hell. He'd been promised a bit of warmth there, and this place was leaning toward freezing. He tucked his hands under his armpits and continued glancing around, hoping this time he'd spy some sort of sign as to where he was supposed to go.

Vincent stumbled into the nondescript car and signaled for its immediate take off, the friendly electronic voice responding with an enthusiastic "Yes sir! Right away, sir!" The autopilot revved the engine and they were off, several men behind them clamoring into their own cars.
Leaving the driving to VIRGIL, the autopilot (among many other things) Vincent quickly shed his jacket and pulled up the side of his shirt that was now soaked with blood. A shame, really, this was a nice suit. But he had many others, and the pressing matter right now was taking care of a gash in his side. He pulled a first aid kit from his glove box as the car swerved sharply to throw them off of the trail of headlights behind him. His packet of quick clot to seal the wound hadn't been replaced since its last use. Swaying with the movements of the evading vehicle, Vincent slipped on gloves and attended to his wound, cleaning it out and and tightly wrapping bandages around the dressing. It was a pain to deal with, but certainly better than what it might have been had he not diverted the original direction of his attacker's hidden blade. He looked toward the passenger seat at the suitcase he had stolen from the attacker, just to make sure it was still there.
VIRGIL managed to lose the tail and Vincent, after tucking his shirt in and replacing his jacket, took over and drove to a remote field outside of the city, where the small helicopter was waiting. He pat his inside jacket pocket, to make sure what he needed was still there, and got out of the car, suitcase in hand. The weight of the job lifted a bit as he approached the chopper. He was almost done. He knew he shouldn't have relaxed so quickly, but he was tired and this job was particularly straining. Of course, when he got to the doorway to step inside, karma quite literally hit him in the head with a baseball bat.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vincent didn't sleep often, and when he did it was not restful. So as you can imagine, waking up from true unconsciousness was rather alien to him. Being dumped in a foreign place didn't help either. All Vincent knew was that he had lost the suitcase, and his head hurt. He slowly propped himself up on his elbows and groaned as his the sharp pain in his side reminded him of his earlier escapades. It was daytime and he was outside, and though he wished he had a hat, at least the sky was obscured by a thick layer of clouds.
Eventually, he sat up and took in his surroundings. He appeared to be in the middle of nowhere, and while Vincent was well versed in geography, he could not pin down where exactly he was. He stood up, brushed the grass from his expensive and now bloodied suit. Turning around he saw a young man sitting on a rock on an adjacent hill and looking quite cold. Vincent always felt cold, and didn't notice the actual temperature until now. As if on cue, snowflakes began to fall from the heavy clouds above.
Vincent wasn't sure who this person was, but they didn't look like they were familiar with the area either. Vincent's face remained untouched by confusion or worry or even the sting of his wounds as he walked toward the stranger. It was probably a rather unwelcome sight, really, a tall, stone faced man bleeding from head with a beautiful, but very ruined suit silently approaching you.

Snow. Lovely. Under most circumstances, Gus enjoyed snow. Winter was arguably his favorite season, but now was really not the time to go wading through drifts. At least, Gus thought to himself, If I'm already dead I can't very well freeze to death. He blew at some of the snowflakes and watched them swirl. It was pretty at least, although if it kept up pretty soon the hills were going to look even more alike than they already did. But then again, he couldn't very well be more lost.
Maybe it wouldn't stick. The ground wasn't quite hard yet, so the snowflakes weren't lasting very long as they landed.
Gus was so lost in his thoughts and blowing absently at snowflakes that he didn't even notice the man approaching until he was nearly next to him. He pulled his hand out from his arm long enough to give a small wave, and immediately tucked it back in again. "Hullo there."
The newcomer looked pretty roughed up. That was unfortunate- if his theory was true (And he saw no reason that it wasn't), then the poor man had probably died rather violently. Maybe this was just the afterlife's dumping ground for murdered souls- it made sense in a... roundabout way, he supposed. If you mentally squinted. It was quiet, and other people were apparently few and far between, so there was more than enough time to have a small breakdown between here and wherever they might be headed.
It suddenly occurred to him that there might not be anywhere beyond rolling hills and falling snow. God damn it.
The man didn't seem particularly worried by the situation- Maybe he'd already been dead long enough to get used to it. That or he was in shock. Gus rather patently hoped it wasn't shock, as he had no desire to be the only one for miles when the man started breaking down.

Vincent did not return the greeting. Chit chat was low of the priority list and if he wanted to get anywhere, he was going to have to move before this snow got too bad. Though the snow didn't stick, the dark clouds threatened to make the ground subservient to their will, and the breeze that had started to pick up didn't help Vincent's concern that a blizzard might be coming.
He-, no, they had to move quickly. Vincent didn't know much about the man that, for some unknown reason, was just sitting here, but it was clear that he had been put in a similar position. It was disappointing that this friendly man likely didn't know where they were either and he wasn't sure how mobile he was as he looked rather sickly. Probably drugged. That would explain why he here.
"Come on. Get up. Let's go find shelter," Vincent said, motioning for him to get up. "We'll freeze otherwise."

Gus smiled a little thinly. "I doubt that's something we have to worry too much about." So maybe the man hadn't been briefed on the situation- that or, ah dammit what was the first stage of grief again? Denial?
Still, he obediently- if slowly- got to his feet. His knees were a little shaky, but if that was the cold, or this lingering acclimation he didn't know. His head immediately swam in protest, and Gus had to catch himself to keep from tipping over. "Ah, sorry. A moment, please." Deep breaths, (If you're so dead then why are you breathing?) inhale, exhale. His balance returned after a few moments spent clinging to his knees.
He straightened himself up, and offered a hand to the stranger. "Gus." He half expected the man to ignore it, but it felt like the polite thing to do. "Yourself?"

"I wouldn't underestimate the potential of exposure, if I were you. I doubt dying slowly out here would be a pleasant experience," Said the half dead man to the other half dead man.
Vincent was a patient man by default, but watching the stranger stand up as slowly as was physically capable of a person while still maintaining balance, and then taking additional time after that to catch his breath was not exactly a good sign. However, being stranded in some place with unknown mountains behind them did nothing to ease his mind. Neither did the cold, wet, bloodied shirt clinging to his side serving as a constant reminder that he did not look presentable, and probably wouldn't look presentable anytime soon.
Observing Gus collect himself, Vincent almost offered to carry him. If he thought he could do it without making his side worse, he would. Once he carried a young woman several miles to safety after she had lost one of her legs. Now, however, crippling himself would not be the wisest course of action, even if that meant they had to take it a little slower.
Vincent glanced at the outstretched hand and answered his question instead of returning the gesture. "Vincent." He didn't typically give out his real name, but some small sentimental part of him wanted this man to know his name if, for one reason or another, one or both of them die here. "Tell me what you know about the surrounding area." He suspected it wasn't much.

Gus let his hand fall to his side. Clearly "Vincent" wasn't fond of pleasantries, so he wasn't going to push the point. Firgured- no one overly concerned with chit-chat died in a suit. A bloody suit. His eyes kept listing toward the nasty splotch- he had to remind himself to maintain eye contact.
"There's not much to know, far as I can tell. It's all hills that way, " he gestured southward. "The mountains you can see for yourself." He waved to the west. "I thought I saw a river that way when I was on higher ground. Might have been a trick of the light. Hallucination, maybe. I haven't seen it sense. But, uh, that's where I'm heading." He hesitated a bit and glanced around, trying to jog his own memory. "You know what they say about rivers." (The Greeks were right all along, we must have fallen off the ferry.)
He rubbed his hands together- they were already getting cold again. He was getting more and more agitated by the splotch on Vincent's side- that was almost certainly fresh blood, and while he told himself that it didn't matter, (You can't get more dead than dead), there was a nervous little bell ringing in his head that maybe they should be looking for a doctor.
"Are you going to be all right there? That looks... not good."

Vincent almost smiled. Almost really meaning the thought of a smile whisked briefly across his face. "It's not as bad as it could be. The original strike was aimed at my stomach. I can't really complain that I'm not dead." It would be okay for now, but the bandages probably needed changing, as he had no idea how long he was out, and he only had limited supplies with him. Then he felt his side and, despite the wind and what he assumed were the hours he was lying in the grass, his jacket was still rather wet. Either he was still bleeding terribly, which didn't feel like the case, or it had only taken a few minutes, if that, for him to actually get here. But that didn't make sense. He didn't recognize this area at all.
"If you saw a river that way, then that is where we will go," Vincent replied simply, starting in that direction and glancing back to see if Gus was following him. This was going to be a long trip, and the snow was picking up. At least they had some semblance of direction, he supposed. Whatever was going to happen, they had to stay calm. Which brought up another question.
"You seem rather calm under the circumstances."

"It's not as bad as it could be. The original strike was aimed at my stomach. I can't really complain that I'm not dead."
Gus visibly winced at this. No avoiding it, it would probably be best to inform Vincent of their plight as soon as possible. It just wasn't right to let him keep believing like this. Still, the words stuck in his throat like they were rooted- he'd offered his condolences to many people in mourning, but how the hell were you supposed to offer them to the dead?
He trailed behind his new companion, mentally constructing and deconstructing sentences.
I'm terribly sorry, and this may come as a bit of a shock, but I believe we've both passed on.
I'm afraid we're both a bit less than living at the moment.
Funny you should mention being alive, because we're both dead.
We're pushing up daisies.
So how does it feel to be a walking corpse because honestly I don't see a difference.
"You seem rather calm under the circumstances."
Gus rubbed the back of his neck and sighed. "Well, I've had my time to panic." (I'm terribly sorry)" I mean, I guess I don't really..." (I'm afraid that) " I mean..." (YOUR BROTHER KILLED YOU) " I..." Gus immediately stamped down on the bubble of panic that was rising and forced it to the background, just like when he first woke up. You're a professional. He told himself. You knew this day would come so stop acting like a child.
"There's no use panicking, it won't change or help anything. By the way did I mention that we're dead?"
Smooth.

Vincent stopped and looked back at Gus, his face actually conforming to an expression of serious concern. Of course, he didn't even think to interpret those words as 'we are currently dead'. After all, Vincent was very much alive. The pain pulsating from the side of his head and the sharp twinge in his side as he walked served as a sufficient reminder of that. However, he didn't know exactly how he should interpret this. The possibilities ranged from something as simple as hopelessness to the very not simple suicide bombing, or something similar. While the latter did not appear to be the case, Vincent certainly couldn't rule it out.
A thousand possible outcomes and courses of action ran through his head as he started to make assumptions. Anxiety was setting in and, while Vincent had been in difficult and unexpected situations, nothing had been quite like this. If he could see the purple sky above the clouds, it would be quite different, but for now he was quite sure he was on Earth, and not even remotely knowing where they were made him quite uncomfortable. For now, he thought, he just had to stay calm and take things as they presented themselves. He swallowed his currently irrational conclusions and returned to his calm, unemotional demeanor.
"Dead? You shouldn't be so pessimistic, Mr. Gus. I am a highly trained individual. You and I will be just fine." It was as much a warning not to try anything as it was (supposed to be) a reassurance.

Gus braced himself for the worst- yelling, swearing, maybe a thrown punch- lord knows he might have done worse if he received that kind of information (In the least tactful manner possible, he chided himself.).
He was actually surprised to see the man's face return to normal, and produced perhaps the third most baffled expression possible to his response. Gus actually felt his head tilt to the side and his mouth go slightly ajar. It took a moment for him to realize that perhaps he wasn't being entirely clear.
"No, sorry, I don't think you understand- my fault, I'm a bit addled." He concluded that his brief rest at the rock had not been nearly long enough, and while his head wasn't swimming anymore, it obviously wasn't functioning to the best degree right now. He pulled his hands out from under his arms and started waving them oddly, trying his best to pantomime his point. "I don't mean- we're not going to die, that's not a euphemism. We're already there. We are... unliving, as it were." He glanced at Vincent's side and gestured at it. "I was... murdered, and I'm afraid... I think you were too. I'm really very sorry for your loss." He put on his best sympathetic smile and clasped his hands. "Truly."

Murdered. Unliving. Okay. Vincent took another moment of analysis and breathed in deeply, partially to remind himself he was definitely breathing. It was difficult enough to come to terms with one’s own demise. It was even harder to accept death, and then learning that it was not, in fact the end, and it was obvious that Gus had accepted death. Vincent, however, did not doubt his status of living.
His apology was obviously rehearsed, and it was apparent that this man worked in either a hospital or a mortuary. Vincent had his own “I’m sorry for your loss” routine that he had perfected over many uses, though he felt his method was more sincere. He found himself wandering into a critique of Gus’ method when he put his mind back on track.
“There’s no reason to be sorry. I am very alive. I am a doctor, Mr. Gus, I think I would know, ” Vincent started, quickly checking his neck for his pulse. It was irregular, but it was always irregular. “Look,” he grabbed one of Gus’ hands to place his fingers over his wrist where his pulse could be found, “My heart is beating, if that is how you define living. I am breathing. The synapses of my mind are firing and I am responding to the stimuli around me. I am in pain, and we need to get to this river, if it exists, before the weather gets worse.” His voice was calm as he tried to keep the situation as together as possible. The last thing he wanted to deal with was this already weakened man having some sort of breakdown.

Gus instinctively jerked his hand away from the doctor and flicked his wrist. This was not working out as he'd planned (You need to calm down.), and he was already becoming agitated with the situation. (You can't expect people to just accept their own death immediately. All things in good time.)
Heartbeats though, were a definite hole in his theory. He pressed two fingers to his own wrist, frowning. He didn't feel anything at all, just like the last couple of hours. Wait a min-
No. He was being foolish. He was dead. It was better to embrace it and move on with life-unlife?- than to waste time hoping for stupid facts that could not, in any sane or known universe, be true. He shook his hands like they were wet. "Fine then. We agree to disagree. I'll be dead. You'll be alive. Let's find this river." He shoved his hands back under his arms, looking more like a petulant child who'd lost an argument than an adult letting the subject drop.

Vincent retracted his hand and put it in his pocket. He was missing his gun. That was alright, he supposed. For now it would be easier to work with someone who wasn't constantly worrying and making rash decisions for "their own survival." And while ignoring one's mortality could be just as dangerous, it wasn't worth the trouble at this very moment. It was kind of odd that apparently Gus was thoroughly convinced he was some sort of undead, but that he will have to wait until they found shelter from the snow, which continued to pick up.
Vincent turned back again before rolling his eyes without another word and headed... whatever direction. It infuriated him to not know which direction was North. The clouds in the sky hid the sun, but even the clouds seemed strange, like the light was dispersed evenly above them and it made Vincent wonder if they were truly outdoors. Maybe this was an obscure... hallucination? Simulation? The wet snow felt real. They were probably able to freeze and die. The only thing he could really do now was keep his guard up and forge temporary solution while he figured all this out.

Vincent turned and began walking again, and Gus followed quietly behind. This whole situation was- well it was ridiculous, that's what it was. Two dead men caught in what very well might turn out to be a blizzard- he didn't think he knew of any potential afterlives quite like that. At least, he thought, you can't very well freeze to death if you're already gone.
(Unless the doctor's right. He's a doctor, after all, he knows these things.)
Gus couldn't help but rub his temple. He was going to give himself a headache if he didn't stop arguing with himself. Whatever. It didn't matter anyway. Que Sera Sera and all that jazz.
But back to the weather. It didn't look like it was improving very much, and there was no sort of hut or shelter or even a hole in the ground nearby to take cover in until it blew over. Hell, he wasn't even sure if there was even a real river in these hills, for all he knew he'd been hallucinating.
They'd probably make better time on wing than on foot, but if he was being perfectly honest he didn't quite trust himself not to drop out of the sky. He probably stood a better chance than Vincent, considering that out of the two of them, Gus was, you know, bleeding a heck of a lot less. He weighed the two options in his mind- fly up quickly, locate the river, and hope he could land before passing out, or keep wandering blindly in hopes they found something that might offer any sort of help, slowly growing colder and colder until their joints stopped cooperating and they were forced to stop.
Gus reached out and tapped Vincent on the shoulder. Jerking a thumb up toward the sky, he said "I'm going to get a better view of the area. I'm still a bit lightheaded, and I'm a smallish sort of bird, so I don't imagine it's going to improve when I head up. Um, so if I pass out mid-flight- and I don't want to hold you to anything, especially with that side of yours- but I'd appreciate it if you tried to catch me."
He gave a nod and an encouraging sort of smile (more for himself than his companion), and jumped into the air.
Of course, he wasn't expecting to come down quite that quickly, and his legs must have been just as surprised as the rest of him, because they gave out almost immediately, pitching the mortician down the hill and into the most undignified kind of roll imaginable, until he finally landed in a disheveled, lightly bruised heap at the bottom.
