Gus winced. (Awful lot of blood for a dead man.(Why does a dead man bleed?)) "Sorry." he apologized again.
He cocked his head at Vincent's sort-of query. The association seemed fairly obvious to him. "Well, um, you know, it's a pun? Everybody, everybirdy..." he shrugged a little. "You know, like, if we were all dogs it might be everydoggy..." Actually, the more he analyzed it the more ridiculous the term sounded, in the way that repeating a word made it seem less like one. He rubbed his arms and gave a smile he only realized later that Vincent couldn't see. "You know. Just a silly turn of phrase." (You'd think he'd be able to figure it out on his own, though.)
The wind was picking up, and their little treehouse rattled a bit. (We'll have to dig our way out if this keeps up.) Gus opted to try and keep the conversation going- anything to distract from the cold outside. "So, um, where were you from?" A question for a question. For two men who'd spent a couple hours wandering together, he realized they knew very little about one another. Might as well start, seeing as they needed some way to pass the time.

Everydoggy? If we were all dogs? Vincent was now looking directly at Gus and studying his face for signs of lying. It was hard to tell with half his face covered up, but it didn't seem like it. Either that or Gus was a very good liar and all of this was some kind of ploy to get information from him. A ploy involving extreme weather conditions? He tried to balance out his paranoia with rational thinking, which is half of a spy's job. He decided to play it safe by keeping the conversation on track. "I was born in Washington state, are you saying we're all birds?"

"Are you saying we're not?" Gus chuckled. Then what Vincent said began to sink in.
It was hard to tell if the man was joking. He didn't seem like he had a sense of humor, but maybe he had the dry, subtle kind Gus was never good at catching. Not until a few days later, at any rate. But say he wasn't joking (Ridiculous), and actually he believed he wasn't a bird. (Well then, he'd have to be stark raving mad, now wouldn't he?) (And what would he be otherwise?)
Not that the idea of being shoved in a box with a lunatic wasn't positively charming, but it wasn't doing anything to make the situation more comfortable. He didn't seem like the violent type (Although he's pretty calm for a man with his side sliced open.), but books and covers. Gus took a moment to strain the muscles in his hand. Nothing. Not even the tip of a pinfeather. What an inconvenient time to become a cripple. (Get used to it, you've got your whole afterlife ahead of you.) He'd just have to hope he wasn't called to prove his race.
"You... are joking, right?" Gus asked hopefully. (Please be joking.)

"...No. I don't joke." Vincent was really hoping that Gus was joking. Vincent had talked to psychopaths before, and had heard some unbelievable things (a few of which even turned out to be true), but this was just something else entirely. You would think that after you've fallen down a few times, you'd give up on the bird theory. This lead Vincent to picturing Gus hunched over and conspiring with pigeons in the park. Sure, he didn't have twenty years of this under his belt yet, but it still felt significant to Vincent that he hadn't met any man quite like this before.
The wind picked up and the tree house creaked. It probably wasn't meant to hold this much weight and Vincent sincerely hoped that it didn't tip over. His open wound wouldn't take well to having an entire person thrust upon it. Vincent never before had to rely on pure luck in a situation. There seemed to be a lot of firsts for the spy today and it was beginning to be more and more clear to him that there was little he could do about the situation. He was actually feeling cold, and it wasn't because he was due for pills. He had no idea where he was and there didn't seem to be anything around for miles. He was crammed next to a now definitely crazy man. He wished he was a bird.
He had to stay calm. Just. Stay. Calm. "You and I are human beings. Most people are. Birds are quite different."

Gus had a nervous, placating smile plastered across his face. Not that Vincent could see it, and Gus had no intent to change that (What a suit of armor a sweater is! Truly ample protection against this lunatic!). He did, however, inch (Or rather, given the dimensions of their little haven, millimeter) away from the man, trying to put a little distance between them. It wasn't so effective, and unless he wanted to abandon him and the treehouse entirely, he wasn't putting much more than those extra few molecules between them.
(Well. It isn't as if I'm going to die.)
With that little bit of reassurance, Gus allowed himself to relax. Just a little. After all, what's left for a dead man to fear? He was going to have to practice that. This not-fear-ness.
There was a healthy pile of snow growing up around the base of the tree. If nothing else, when they finally did leave the treehouse, there would be a rather soft place to land. He turned his attention back to the (Previously so normal-seeming) man.
"Well, yes, we are. But most people are also birds." He nodded and spoke slowly. "You know? Shifting, molting, flying? Or ah," he hastily caught himself. "Your friends doing so? There was that thing a little while back about a kiwi pilot? First flightless bird in the air? Any of this ring a bell?" To his credit, he was able to keep his voice mostly even, like he was trying to coax memories of bird-dom from Vincent's mind.

None of that rang a bell. Normally, Vincent wasn't the type to take these things very far. Clearly, this man was not going to change his mind on the matter and it would be smart not to upset the man further. He was going to keep silent...
"Not at all. I have only encountered one individual who even attempted to do any of that, and they simply rolled down a hill, not one feather in sight."
He watched this bundled up man tense, make the motion of scooting away with no noticeable results, and relax and suddenly felt ill. With incredible discomfort Vincent slid onto his back, his feet resting against the top of the adjacent wall and his knees bent uncomfortably. Had to elevate his legs. Had to elevate his wound. He recognized the signs of shock, and it was certainly from blood loss. He wished he had a dumb looking sweater.

"Ha." Sometimes, sometimes, he knew when he was being insulted. "You must not have met many people then."
He crossed his arms and curved his shoulders, one part for warmth and one part for the excellent pouting position it provided. He started breathing heavily into the stale air of his shirt, trying to get it to warm a little. He could feel Vincent shifting position next to him, and leaned to the side to give the man room until he was finished. His new position didn't seem like the most comfortable one, and Gus had to wonder if it was helping his side any.
He chose not to comment on it. He was still feeling a bit peevish, and was getting particularly annoyed at his own bodily failures at the moment. He continued flexing and pushing, trying vainly to get anything, a bit of down, the tip of a beak, anything really, not just to prove a point but because it was getting steadily colder, despite their close quarters, and having a few feathers for insulation would be helpful, to say the least. And yet, here he was, several cold, silent minutes later, bare-skinned and featherless. He was just going to have to suck it up until they could find some place warmer (What if there isn't some place warmer?), and trust that things would work out on their own. They usually did.
"How long do you think this blizzard will last?" he asked mildly, more to break the silence than anything else. He hated quiet. It made him uncomfortable.

Vincent was very sure that he had met more people in one week than Gus had met in his whole life. He wasn't going to argue with a mad man. He already had an awful headache. There was blood smeared on the wood flooring of their monkey house, and Vincent didn't want to look at it. Right now he was just going to focus on elevating the wound. Shifting around more during the silence, he managed to turn on his side away from Gus.
Unfortunately, he knew part of staying conscious was engaging in conversation. But what was he supposed to say? Did it really matter at this point?
"How long do you think this blizzard will last?"
He was supposed to know this. He was supposed to have enough knowledge to assess the clouds and the rate of snowfall, but it all seemed to have just left him. "I don't know. Too long." He was starting to feel something impending set over him and it weighed on him greatly. He was going to die here. He thought that at least when he'd die, he'd understand his circumstances. However, what he was left with was this terrible confusion. He didn't know where he was, or why he was there, or what he had really accomplished in his life, and no, he wasn't supposed to die yet. Not here. Not with this lunatic.
"Let me out. We're not getting any further in this box and I need to find medical attention as quickly as possible." His words sounded urgent and he shifted yet again, trying to sit up to readily climb out. He was cold and tired and disoriented, but he was not going to die here. Not curled up like some animal.

"You can't be serious." Gus sat up, not to let Vincent pass, but out of surprise. "It's freezing out there."
As if their earlier conversation weren't enough, this only cemented Vincent's madness in Gus's mind. There was nothing out there- what were the odds of finding another doctor taking a stroll through the blizzard? The only end he could see to this plan involved Vincent being buried in snow until Spring (Does Purgatory have a Spring? He was beginning to regret those Sunday mornings spent sleeping in the pew.). If nothing else, the man was likely to get lost. Gus didn't feel responsible, per se, but... it didn't sit right with him to just let the man go off blindly into the snow.
He resumed the position of a roadblock. There was no need to leave the box, not when they had just gotten here. It was the best and only shelter they had, and a blessing that it was found at all. Vincent, weakened and just a bit tweaked in the head, was obviously not seeing that. "Just lie down. You'll be fine."

"It's freezing in here." Vincent's breathing grew heavier as he felt his strength draining. He was not going to die in a box with a mad man. He made a feeble attempt to push Gus out of the way, but what seemed like an easy task to a healthy Vincent was now impossible. Blood smeared onto Gus' sweater when Vincent slipped and fell onto his lap. After righting himself with much effort, he took a few deep breaths before continuing.
"You need to let me out of this box. I may not have a chance out there, but I certainly have more of a chance than I do sitting in here and getting nowhere. I'm-" He was about to go on, but a sudden wave of disorientation fell upon him and he leaned against the opposite wall. I'm going to die either way, he thought and closed his eyes. He didn't want to look at the spinning room anymore. "What do you do for a living, Gus?"

Gus threw up a few small cries of protest as Vincent tried to clamber over him, and seriously considered using force to make him stay put (Does it really matter? Let him go.). It didn't matter either way, as Vincent lost his balance and fell onto him. "You wouldn't stand a chance out there." Watching Vincent struggle to right himself was just a bit painful, and Gus couldn't help but feel a little guilty. He was fairly certain it was his fault the man seemed to be falling apart now.
"I'm a... was, a mortician." He shrugged. There wasn't much else to say about it. "Why?"
He patted the blood on his sweater. The yarn was just thick enough to keep it from seeping through and sticking to his chest. He stared at his hand a moment, then wiped it absently on the wall. He ducked his head into his sweater, then shuffled it off. He started regretting this course of action as soon as the cold prickled on his skin, but he wasn't going to back out of it now (Not like I'm going to die, after all. Just be very uncomfortable.). He shivered violently. (Just suck it up.) "Here. Just... please, stop moving. We're going to be fine, I promise. Just need to wait it out." He lay it as best as he could on the man. He meant it as one part apology, one part incentive to just stay put.
He huddled back into himself, arms folded around his knees and face buried between them. No, it was definitely freezing in here, Vincent was right. Gus doubted there was a difference between the temperature inside and outside. But it was dry, at least. And the wind was (mostly) kept out. The only thing Gus was certain of was that it was better than outside. Had to be.

A mortician. "Perfect," He thought out loud. That was unlike him, speaking his mind. He briefly wondered again if us was an agent who was to dispose of his body once he lured him here, but there was no point in being paranoid now that it was too late. He didn't bother to answer Gus' question.
He felt the over-sized sweater drape over him, but he didn't feel any warmer. Part of him didn't want to accept any help, and part of him felt guilty for letting Gus freeze. He would've insisted Gus keep his sweater, but couldn't find the will to do much of anything. It didn't really matter at this point, there was no way either of them would live through it. He tried to find satisfaction in what he was sure his last moments, but only found disappointment. He had so much left to do. So much he still had to make up for. He simply sat there, eyes closed and breathing heavily, feeling himself starting to slip into unconsciousness. I wish I could have died in a nicer suit, was his last thought.

Gus focused on his breathing. He was a bird made for far warmer climes than this. His fingertips were already beginning to burn with cold, and he absently rubbed them against his arms a while before giving up. The friction wasn't doing much anyway, and he was getting sleepy.
He roused himself just long enough to ask "You awake?" Vincent's head lolled. He wasn't breathing. (Dead.) (Of course he's dead, you knew that already.) The thought still sat awkwardly in his stomach, and he returned to his former position. He should get some sleep himself. Yes, that was a (terrible) good plan, yes... it would pass the time, keep his mind off the cold.
Gus's movements were getting slow and stiff. He was regretting giving Vincent his shirt (You could just take it back. It's not like he'll notice.) No. He'd ask for it back when the blizzard let up.
If the blizzard let up.
He was very tired.
The afterlife was a lot colder than he'd expected. Good thing he brought a sweater.
